Lowest Scores by Kings XI Punjab (KXIP)

As an IPL team that has always had some quality players to call upon in matches, IPL fans would agree that Kings XI Punjab has somewhat under-performed ever since the first season began in 2008.

Despite having the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Virender Sehwag, and Chris Gayle in their batting order, and unearthing gems like Shaun Marsh and Paul Valthaty, they have always been susceptible (like most other franchises) to a spectacular batting collapse.

Top 5 Lowest Scores by KXIP

Although they have treated us to some wonderful batting displays, here’s a look at 5 lowest Team Total by KXIP in IPL matches over the years.

5. 95/9 v Chennai Super Kings (2015)

Punjab have put in some of their best-ever batting displays against the men in yellow, but number five on this list of 5 lowest scores by Kings XI Punjab in IPL matches comes against them as well. Chasing a daunting total of 193 for victory, Punjab’s batting line-up never got going in the face of Chennai’s experienced bowlers, eventually limping their way to 95/9 in their 20 overs. Former Chennai Super Kings man Murali Vijay was the only Punjab batsman to go past 20 on a disappointing day for George Bailey’s men (another ex-Chennai player!).

4. 92/8 v Chennai Super Kings (2009)

Dhoni’s men make a second straight appearance on this list of Lowest Scores by KXIP in IPL matches, this time ripping through the batting lineup on foreign shores! The IPL was played in South Africa in 2009, and the match in question took place in Durban. Punjab had actually put in an amazing bowling effort to restrict Chennai to just 116/9 in the first innings and would have fancied their chances to go on and win.

However, they did not account for Chennai’s spin triple threat – Murali, Ashwin, and Raina bagged two each while Thilan Thushara bagged two more in an absolute masterclass of bowling under pressure, as Punjab could only muster 92/8 in response and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

3. 88 v Royal Challengers Bangalore (2015)

Often derided for not having a particularly potent bowling attack while fielding a devastating batting line-up, this was one occasion where both departments came good for RCB. Batting first, they smashed the Kings XI bowlers all over the park, led by 117 off 57 balls by Chris Gayle, on their way to 226/3. Punjab had no reply for the searing double-pronged spell of left-arm fast bowling from Mitchell Starc and Sreenath Aravind, both of whom bagged four wickets each, as they were bundled out for 88 in reply, handing RCB a huge 138-run win.

No, this isn’t a typo – the third and second entries on this list of 5 Lowest Scores by KXIP in IPL history are twin totals of 88 against Royal Challengers Bangalore! This particular one also happens to be the most recent as it came during a crushing 10-wicket loss in 2018. Batting first, Punjab were skittled out for this paltry score thanks to 3/23 from Umesh Yadav, with only three batsmen reaching double figures. Bangalore cantered to a win in response, not losing a wicket and barely breaking a sweat as their openers led them to victory.
