The qualification was confirmed after the World Team Championships Finals in Busan, South Korea. It was a dream come true, especially for veteran player Sharath Kamal, who has participated in the Olympics four times before. He expressed his immense joy on social media, saying, “This one is truly special!”

The qualification process was intense, with the World Team Championships playing a crucial role. The remaining spots after the finals were awarded based on world rankings. India’s men’s team ranked 15th and the women’s team ranked 13th, securing their berths alongside teams from Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, Sweden, and Thailand.

Although both teams didn’t secure Olympic berths through the main path at the World Championships, losing in the pre-quarterfinals, their world rankings proved to be crucial. The men’s team, led by Kamal, faced a tough challenge against South Korea and lost 0-3. The women’s team, led by Manika Batra, fell short against Chinese Taipei with a 1-3 scoreline.

But despite these setbacks, the Indian teams never lost sight of their ultimate goal. Their dedication and consistent performance throughout the season, reflected in their world rankings, ultimately paved the way for their historic qualification. This achievement shows the tremendous progress and potential of Indian table tennis, highlighting the sport’s growing popularity and talent pool in the country.

The journey to Paris 2024 has just begun for the Indian teams. With this historic qualification, their focus will now shift to rigorous training and preparation to face the best table tennis players from around the world on the biggest sporting stage.
