Real Madrid’s goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has cited support for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the match against Real Sociedad in the La Liga today. Apparently, the VAR ruled out the goal effort by Adnan Januzaj that handed Madrid a victory by 2:1 in the end.

Courtois said that his line of sight was impacted when Januzaj was taking the strike on the ball to which he said, “When he shot there were three people in my line, Merino, another from Real and one of us who was covering the shot,”.

Courtois happily collected three points as he further said,

“I didn’t see anything and in the end, if you don’t see the ball and it goes by so fast it won’t give you time to react. It is an offside position.

“It may be right or not, but it prevents seeing it. That is what the VAR is for and I think the decisions have been clear.”

The reason why VAR ruled out that goal is that Mikel Merino was adjudged to be offside which restricted Sociedad to just one goal in the match.

Shortly, Karim Benzema created the lead in the match as he netted the goal which later Madrid managed to hold on to until the end of the match.

After the win against the Sociedad, Zinedine Zidane‘s side now claim to the top of the La Liga standings, surpassing their arch-rivals Barcelona. Real Madrid is ahead of Barcelona in the league in spite of having tied for the same points with them and owing to their superior head to head record over them.

Real Madrid has won all the three matches they have played since the season resumption. And now they are all set to face Real Mallorca at home on Wednesday (24th June).
