South Africa enters semifinal with thrilling win over West Indies in T20 World Cup 2024
South Africa defeated West Indies in a thrilling encounter at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, to book their place in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. The Proteas’ victory was anything but straightforward, with rain interruptions, dropped catches, and a tense chase keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats.
Opting to bat first, West Indies got off to a shaky start. Losing their opener Shai Hope and wicket-keeper batter Nicholas Pooran, early on. Kyle Mayers (35) and Roston Chase (52) steadied the ship with a partnership of 81 runs. However, South Africa’s spinners, Tabraiz Shamsi (3/27) and Keshav Maharaj (1/24), put the brakes on the scoring rate and picked up wickets at regular intervals. The Windies finished their innings with a below-par total of 135 for 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
South Africa started their chase positively, with Quinton de Kock (12) scoring freely. However, their momentum was halted by the arrival of Andre Russell (2/19). The Windies’ pace bowler dismissed both de Kock and Reeza Hendricks (0) within the first two overs, putting the Proteas on the back foot.
Just as things started to get interesting, rain lashed down, forcing a lengthy delay. When the covers came off, the target was revised to 123 runs in 17 overs due to the DLS method.

Heinrich Klaasen (22 off just 10 balls) proved to be the hero for South Africa. He took on the West Indies’ spinner, Gudakesh Motie, in a crucial over, smashing a six and three consecutive fours. This aggressive batting swung the momentum in South Africa’s favor and brought them back into contention.
Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Proteas’ lower held their nerve. Marco Jansen (21*) played a vital role towards the end, including a six off the final over to seal the victory.
This win is a significant moment for South Africa. They have a reputation for falling short in big tournaments, but this victory showcases their newfound resilience. They are winning close games, finding ways to overcome pressure, and playing with a winning attitude.
South Africa will now look forward to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024, hoping to continue their impressive run and perhaps finally break their ICC trophy drought. This victory has instilled belief in the Proteas’ camp, and they will be a team to watch in the knockout stages.
