West Indies vs South Africa: Caribbean registers third consecutive T20 series win over Proteas

The Caribbean has registered their third consecutive T20I series win over Proteas. During the West Indies vs South Africa 2nd T20 match, played at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad, the home team defeated the visitors by 30 runs. 

After winning the toss, South Africa elected to field first, but this decision had a reverse impact. Batting first, West Indies had a great start to their innings. Alick Athanaze (28 runs off 21 balls) and Shai Hope added 41 runs for the first wicket. Shai Hope continued his impressive inning and smashed 41 runs off just 22 balls, including 4 sixes and 2 fours.

West Indies captain, Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford played a brilliant inning. Powell smashed a splendid 22-ball 35 runs, with the help of 3 sixes and 1 four. Whereas, Rutherford scored a blistering 29 runs off just 18 balls, including 2 sixes and 3 fours. In the end, Romario Shepherd’s 9 runs and Akeal Hosein’s 3 runs helped West Indies post a mammoth total of 179 runs.

Chasing the target of 180 runs, South Africa had an aggressive start to their inning. Openers Ryan Rickleton and Reeza Hendricks had a wonderful partnership of 63 runs in just 4.3 overs, for the first wicket. Ryan scored 20 runs off 13 balls and smashed 2 sixes. Hendricks looked dangerous but fell after scoring fast-paced 44 runs off just 18 balls, including 2 sixes and 6 fours.

Proteas captain Aiden Markram scored 19 runs in 9 balls. Tristan Stubbs, who had a great IPL 2024 season this year, scored 28 runs in 24 balls. At one point, South Africa had control of the game. They were 129 for 3 in the 14th over but lost 7 wickets for 20 runs in the last 6 overs. South Africans were bowled out for 149 in 19.4 overs, falling short of target by 30 runs.

Shamar Joseph and Romario Shepherd were the pick of the bowlers, both scalped 3-3 wickets. While Shepherd conceded just 15 runs in 4 overs, Joseph gave 31 runs in 4 overs. Romario Shepherd was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for his incredible performance with the ball and the bat.

Earlier, in the West Indies vs South Africa 1st T20 match, the Caribbean defeated the Proteas by 7 wickets. Now, both teams will clash at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad for the third and final match of the series.

However, the third game is a dead rubber as West Indies has already won the three-match T20 series. This win marks the third consecutive T20I series win for West Indies over South Africa.
