Kapil Dev believes teamwork holds key to India’s T20 World Cup hopes
Legendary Indian cricketer Kapil Dev has weighed in on the ongoing T20 World Cup in the West Indies, stressing that collective performance, not individual brilliance, will be crucial for India to lift the trophy.
Speaking in a recent interview, Kapil Dev cautioned against over-reliance on star players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, or Kuldeep Yadav. “Why talk about only these few players? Everybody in the team has a role to play,” he stated. “Their job is to win the tournament, and that requires everyone to contribute.”

Kapil Dev emphasized that individual brilliance might win a single match, but consistent team effort is paramount to conquering a tournament like the World Cup. “If you start depending solely on Bumrah or Arshdeep, you’re setting yourself up for failure,” he asserted. “We need to focus on the team as a whole. That gives you a better chance of winning than relying on just a few players.”
Kapil Dev used his own experience as an example. In his history-making 1983 World Cup win, he wasn’t the sole performer. “Roger Binny, Mohinder Amarnath, Kirti Azad, Yashpal Sharma – all these players came out with match-winning performances,” he recalled. “If you become reliant on one player, you won’t win tournaments consistently.”
Kapil Dev extended his best wishes to the Indian team for their crucial semi-final clash against England. He expressed his hope that the “Men in Blue” can overcome the challenge and ultimately clinch the trophy. “All the best, good luck,” he said. “I hope the Indian players continue playing the way they have been. They just need to avoid a bad day and an early exit like the last 50-over World Cup.”
The 65-year-old legend also expressed his pride in witnessing India’s consistent presence as a title contender in major tournaments. “We should be happy that we can believe in our team’s ability to win,” he said. “Twenty years ago, such thinking wasn’t common. It’s a significant achievement that India enters every tournament as a favorite. That, in itself, is a big deal.”
Kapil Dev acknowledged the exceptional performance of Jasprit Bumrah, who has been India’s bowling spearhead with 11 wickets in the tournament so far. “Bumrah is far better than I ever was,” he declared. “These young players are much better than us in many ways. We had more experience, but they possess superior skills, fitness, and work ethic. They are fantastic players.”
However, Kapil Dev downplayed the role of the captain. “Anyone can do captaincy,” he stated. “Hardik, Virat, Rohit – they can all lead the team. The bowler needs to deliver when given the ball. Yes, the captain is there to guide and support, but a loss doesn’t necessarily reflect poorly on their captaincy skills.”
Kapil Dev’s message is clear: the Indian team’s success hinges on a united effort. While individual brilliance can be a catalyst, consistent team spirit and performance are the true ingredients for a World Cup victory. As India readies for the semi-final, all eyes will be on them to see if they can rise to the occasion and translate Kapil Dev’s belief into reality.
