Teams That Have Never Won the T20 World Cup
Over the years, many teams have taken part in the T20 World Cup without lifting the title even once. Some of them are regulars at ICC events, while others are growing teams who are still learning at this level. So, which teams have never won a T20 World Cup? Let’s take a look.
These teams include South Africa, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Scotland, USA, Uganda, Oman, UAE, Nepal, PNG, Hong Kong, Kenya, Canada and Italy. They have all appeared at different stages like group stage, Super 8, Super 10, Super 12, semifinals and even a final, but the trophy has always gone to some other side.
South Africa and New Zealand have played some of the best cricket in T20 World Cup history, yet the trophy still stays out of reach for both of them. They have reached the final once each, but on both occasions they finished as runners‑up.
In almost every edition, at least one of these teams has reached the knockout stage. Yet, when the last match of the tournament comes, the winners have always been other nations like India, Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, West Indies or Australia.
South Africa’s T20 World Cup journey
South Africa have taken part in every T20 World Cup since 2007. They often start as one of the strongest squads on paper, and they usually do well in the group phase.
Across editions, South Africa have reached the Super 8 or Super 10 rounds several times. They also made the semifinals in a few tournaments, showing that they are always in the mix when it comes to the latter stages.
However, for a long time, they could not go beyond the semifinal stage. They would get close, but one bad day or one tight game would push them out of the race. This pattern continued until the 2024 edition.
Runners‑up in 2024
In 2024, South Africa finally made it to a T20 World Cup final. It was a big step for them, because they had missed out at that stage many times in previous years.
They met India in the final. South Africa fought hard but ended up on the losing side. India won the match and took the trophy, while South Africa finished as runners‑up.
Even though they could not win the title, that run showed that South Africa remain one of the top T20 sides in the world. They once again entered the 2026 tournament as a serious contender and even reached the semifinals, but the first T20 World Cup trophy for the Proteas is still missing.
New Zealand’s T20 World Cup record
New Zealand have also played every T20 World Cup tournament so far. Much like South Africa, they have been one of the most stable and competitive teams in white‑ball cricket.
From the early editions, New Zealand reached the Super 8 or Super 10 stages several times. They rarely exit in the first round, and they are known for going deep into tournaments.
Over time, they also turned into a strong knockout side. They reached multiple semifinals before finally breaking through and reaching the final in 2021.
Runners‑up in 2021
New Zealand’s only T20 World Cup final so far came in 2021. They faced Australia in the title clash after a solid campaign where they beat big teams and topped pressure games.
In the final, New Zealand posted a competitive score, but Australia chased it down and won the trophy. As a result, New Zealand had to settle for the runners‑up medal.
This result added to New Zealand’s long list of near misses in ICC events. They are often among the best teams in tournaments, but the final step has proved difficult.
Other full members without a T20 World Cup title
Along with South Africa and New Zealand, there are other full member sides who have never won a T20 World Cup. These teams have also had long journeys across many editions.
Afghanistan
Afghanistan started their T20 World Cup story in the group stages and have grown steadily. Over time, they moved from the early rounds into Super 10 and Super 12 stages.
They even reached the semifinals in one of the recent editions, which was a huge moment for their cricket. However, they still wait for their first appearance in a T20 World Cup final, and of course, their first title.
Bangladesh
Bangladesh have played in almost every T20 World Cup since the start. They have reached Super 8, Super 10 and Super 12 rounds at different times.
Yet, they have never crossed into the semifinals or final. Their best runs often end in the middle phase of the tournament, which keeps them away from the title race.
Ireland, Netherlands and Zimbabwe
Ireland, Netherlands and Zimbabwe are also regulars at this level. Each of them has had big wins against top teams in various T20 World Cups.
However, they usually fall short when it comes to putting together a complete run deep into the knockouts. Most of their finishes have come in group stages, Super 8 or Super 12, and they have yet to see a final.
Rising associate teams
In recent years, more associate teams have entered the T20 World Cup and made their mark. Sides like Namibia, Scotland, USA, Uganda, Oman, UAE, Nepal, PNG, Hong Kong, Kenya, Canada and Italy have all taken part in at least one edition.
Many of these teams reached the group stage, first group or Super 8 and Super 12 rounds, which in itself is a big achievement for developing cricket nations. For example, Namibia, Scotland and USA have all played in later group phases beyond the first round.
These teams may not be close to a title yet, but they add depth to the competition. They also bring surprise results that can change group standings and affect the paths of bigger teams.
South Africa and New Zealand: Finalists but not champions
Out of all the teams that have never won the T20 World Cup, only two have reached the final and fallen just short: South Africa and New Zealand.
- South Africa reached the final in 2024 and lost to India.
- New Zealand made the final in 2021 and lost to Australia.
This puts them in a unique group. They have gone further than most of the other title‑less teams, but they still do not have a T20 World Cup trophy to show.
Both teams have also reached the semifinals several times in different editions. That shows how often they are close to the top, even if the ultimate prize has stayed out of reach so far.
Long journeys without the trophy
For many of these sides, the T20 World Cup story is one of steady progress, near misses and occasional heartbreak.
- South Africa: frequent Super 8, Super 10, Super 12 and semifinal runs, plus one final as runners‑up.
- New Zealand: regulars in Super 8 and Super 10, several semifinals and one final as runners‑up.
- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, Zimbabwe: regular group and Super stage participants, still searching for a deep run into the final.
- Namibia, Scotland, USA and others: growing presence at group level, gaining experience against top teams.
Together, these journeys show that winning a T20 World Cup is very difficult, even for strong and consistent teams. One bad day can end a campaign, and one big over can decide a knockout game.
Still, every edition gives these nations another chance to change their story. For now, the list of teams without a T20 World Cup trophy remains long, and at the top of that list, in terms of performance and near misses, stand South Africa and New Zealand.
