Sri Lanka Files Complaint to ICC for not Providing Swimming Pool

Sri Lanka cricket haven’t had the best of starts in the World Cup, having lost their first match vulnerably against New Zealand by 10 wickets. In addition to that, two matches out of four they have played so far had got abandoned due to rain. Nonetheless, they would not be too saddened with the result they have got with 4 points in 4 matches, given their squad lacks quality they once had.

But what has saddened them the most is the treatment they have been getting by International Cricket Council in England in the ongoing ICC World Cup. According to Ashantha de Mel, manager of Sri Lankan Team, ICC has been providing an unfair treatment as compared to other teams.

Moreover, they have filed a complaint about providing green pitches in the matches they have played so far, while other teams were provided with brown pitches at the same venues.

What we have found out is that for the four matches we have played so far at Cardiff and Bristol the ICC has prepared a green pitch, and at the same venues where the other countries have played the pitches are brown and favorable for high scoring,” de Mel told the Daily News. “This is a World Cup where the top ten countries are taking part and I feel that all the participants should be treated equally.”

The pitch being prepared for our match against Australia on Saturday here at The Oval is green. It is not sour grapes that we are complaining but it is very unfair on the part of the ICC that they prepare one type of wicket for certain teams and another type for others.

Even the practice facilities provided at Cardiff were unsatisfactory,” de Mel said. “Instead of three nets, they gave us only two and the hotel we were put up at Bristol did not have a swimming pool, which is very essential for every team for the fast bowlers especially to relax their muscles after practice. The hotels that Pakistan and Bangladesh were put up at Bristol had swimming pools.

We wrote to the ICC listing all these shortcomings four days ago but so far we have not had any response from them. We will continue to write to them until we get a reply.

Factors such as pitches, lack of availabilities might have hampered Sri Lanka’s campaign, however, key players with the likes Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Lahiru Thirimanne to name a few haven’t performed to their ability either.

Players like Angelo Mathews, Perera, etc need to play big innings if Sri Lanka fancy their chances in their next game against Australia.
