Early Cricket Career
Alan Wells, a former captain of Sussex, oversaw Hope’s continued education at Bedes Senior School in East Sussex, England. While playing for Bedes, Hope led the first XI to the national 20/20 final, where he made a half-century against Millfield in a defeat. Hope briefly played for the East Sussex club Chiddingly CC in the 2012 season, averaging 46 runs per game with a high score of 61. At that time, he also gave thought to staying in the UK in order to meet the requirements to join the England cricket team.
Hope was chosen in November 2019 to represent Rangpur Rangers in the Bangladesh Premier League for the 2019–20 season. Shai was included in the Barbados Tridents roster for the 2020 Caribbean Premier League in July of that year. Jason Holder was replaced as the captain of the Barbados Pride for the Regional Super50 competition in 2021–2022 by Hope on October 15, 2022. Holder joined English club Yorkshire for three games of the 2023 County Championship season in April of the following year. In his first game with the team against Leicestershire, Shai Diego Hope scored an innings-high 83 in the second one. Due to the intense rain, his second match for Yorkshire against Gloucestershire ended without a ball being bowled. Hope hit an unbeaten second-innings 53 in his farewell game for the team against Sussex at Hove, which ended in a tie.
International Playing Career
On May 1, 2015, Hope faced England in his first Test. He was included in the West Indies team in August 2016 in preparation for their Test series against India.
In the second game of the tri-series, Hope’s One Day International (ODI) debuted against Sri Lanka. His first ODI century came against Zimbabwe in the second ODI of the same tour, when he hit 101 while pursuing 257 runs. He was given the award for player of the match despite the fact that his goal had no bearing on the draw, which was the first in an One Day International (ODI) between the two teams and the 34th overall.
Hope made his first-ever Test century against England on August 25, 2017. He contributed 246 runs with Kraigg Brathwaite, bringing the West Indies total up to 427. Hope hit his second hundred and led West Indies to a 5-wicket victory in the second innings as they chased down a target of 322. Brathwaite and Hope added 144 runs in the second inning as well. Hope was named man of the match for his outstanding efforts, which helped West Indies defeat England on the road for the first time since 2000. First-class cricket at Headingley Cricket Ground saw this achievement accomplished by Hope’s two-century in the match against England. In April 2018, he received recognition for his role in the 2017 tour of England when he was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year.
Hope joined the West Indies Twenty20 International (T20I) team in December 2017 in preparation for their series against New Zealand. On December 29, 2017, he played in his first T20I for the West Indies against New Zealand.

Hope participated in his 50th ODI match in May 2019 during the opening game of the Ireland Tri-Nation Series. Hope and John Campbell scored 365 runs together for the first wicket in the game. It was also the first time that both of the West Indies openers have hit 150 runs in an ODI, making it the biggest opening partnership in ODI history. Hope made history by becoming the West Indies batsman to reach 2,000 runs in ODIs in the fewest number of innings (47 innings) during the tri-series match against Bangladesh.
The West Indies team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup included Hope. Prior to the competition, the International Cricket Council (ICC) identified Hope as the West Indies team’s main player. Hope participated in his 100th international game for the West Indies on June 17, 2019, in the match against Bangladesh. Hope played against Bangladesh on June 17 at Taunton and scored 96 runs off 121 balls, including 4 fours and a six.

Later, he was included in the ICC ODI Team of the Year for 2019. Hope was selected for the West Indies Test team for their series against England in June 2020.
Hope went on to score 127 against Pakistan on June 8, 2022, in the opening match of a three-game ODI series contested at Multan Cricket Stadium. In doing so, he became the 11th West Indian batsman to reach 4000 runs in a one-day international match and the third-fastest batter in history to do so.

Hope’s 128 unbeaten points on March 21, 2023, helped the Windies defeat South Africa in the second One-Day International of their 2023 tour at Buffalo Park in East London. With this innings, he joined Richie Richardson as the only other West Indian to achieve a century on his ODI captaincy debut. Hope was later named the man of the ODI series together with Heinrich Klaasen.
