West Indies Cricket Board appoints Shai Hope and Rovman Powell as the new captains of Distinct White ball format
West Indies Cricket has announced the players who would succeed Nicholas Pooran as skipper of the Men’s ODI and T20I teams. On Wednesday, Cricket West Indies named Shai Hope and Rovman Powell to lead the team in ODI and T20I matches, respectively. Hope and Powell will succeed Nicholas Pooran as captains of the Men’s ODI and T20I teams for the forthcoming trip of South Africa and beyond, according to West Indies Cricket. After the West Indies’ early withdrawal from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in November, Pooran resigned as captain in both white-ball formats.
If the West Indies are successful in qualifying for the Cricket World Cup later this year, Shai Hope will take over as captain of the One Day International team. The T20I team will be coached by Rovman Powell, who led them in a T20I for the first time in New Zealand last year.

Hope has 104 ODI appearances under his belt for the West Indies, and he has served as vice captain on numerous occasions. And because of his outstanding individual efforts, he was selected for the 2022 ICC ODI Team of the Year.
However, with West Indies unlikely to automatically qualify as it stands, Hope will likely have to captain his team at the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe in June after three matches in South Africa in March.
In a statement issued by Cricket West Indies, Hope stated, “To captain a team that is of such enormous significance not only to myself and my colleagues but to our legion of supporters worldwide, is something one dreams about as a child.”
“I want to express my gratitude to CWI for giving me this fantastic chance. My top aim will be to steer West Indies cricket in the correct path, and I’ll work tirelessly to accomplish that goal. I anticipate serving as captain for a very long time with the help of my teammates and our devoted supporters “said Hope.
Powell hopes to assemble a team in anticipation of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which West Indies is co-hosting.
