Guyana Amazon Warriors continued their unbeaten run in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023, defeating Trinbago Knight Riders by 6 wickets in the 19th match of the tournament on Tuesday.
Opting to bat first, TKR got off to a poor start, losing their first two wickets for just 34 runs. Opener Mark Deyal was the first to go, caught by Azam Khan off the bowling of Shepherd for 1. Martin Guptill followed soon after, dismissed by Imran Tahir for 15. And then, in the fifth over, Sunil Narine was run out for 1.
The Warriors were looking to capitalize on their early advantage, but Akeal Hosein and Kieron Pollard put on a key partnership to steady the ship. Hosein scored an unbeaten 44 off 35 balls, while Pollard gathered a quick 25 off 12 balls. Warriors set the total of 172 for 8 in their 20 overs. However, their innings went in vain when their bowlers failed to defend the target and lost the game by 6 wickets.
In reply, Guyana got off to a solid start, with Shai Hope and Saim Ayub putting on a 93-run partnership for the second wicket. Ayub hunted the bowlers and went on to score 62 off 43 balls while Hope continued to bat fluently, bringing up his brilliant 51 off 40 balls.
Ayub was eventually dismissed for 62, but Shai Hope and Azam Khan took the Warriors home with a solid 33-run partnership. Ayub was the Man of the Match for his 62 off 43 balls.
Ayub’s knock was particularly impressive, as he came in at a crucial juncture and played a responsible knock. He hit 4 fours and 4 sixes in his innings, and he also showed great maturity in rotating the strike and taking singles when needed.
The win was a clinical performance by Guyana, who showed why they are one of the favorites to win the CPL this year. They will be looking to continue their winning streak in their next match against the Barbados Royals.
This was a very good match, and it was a great advertisement for the CPL. Both teams played some excellent cricket, and there were some great individual performances. I am sure that the fans who were at the match were very entertained.
