Prarthana Thombare is among the most famous tennis players from India. She represents India in the women’s doubles. Inspired by her grandfather, Prarthana started playing tennis and gradually fell in love with the sport.


From hitting a ball against the wall of her house to the Olympics, Prarthana Thombare has experienced a long ride. Ever since her debut, the player has done great for her homeland. In the sporting arenas, her name remained on the sideline till her name was declared as Sania Mirza’s partner in the women’s doubles for the Rio. Since then, the soft-spoken and shy Marathi girl from Solapur district has been a major player of tennis circuits & even won the ITF title in France. She secured a place into the top 200 rankings.


Prarthana Thombare was born on 18th June 1994 in Barshi, Solapur district, Maharashtra, India. Prarthana actually chose badminton after watching her grandfather playing in their village. Despite her grandfather failed to pursue a career in badminton, Prarthana successfully shaped her career in the respective sport. His father, Gulabrao Thombare, quit his job to travel with Prarthana for her abroad matches.

At the age of 10, the tennis player started her amateur badminton career. With only one year of practice, she successfully won U-14. Gulabrao took his 11 years old daughter with him at the workplace in Solapur where she played tennis & defeated many of the senior players. Her parents admitted her to the nationals. The little Prarthana defeated all her competitors & that’s when her parents decided to allow Prarthana to take up Badminton as her career. Gradually, Prarthana became more dedicated & responsible towards her goal.

Despite her success and growth, Prarthana has also experienced financial problems throughout her journey. Her father visited almost every administrative authority for Prarthana’s funding but they found no help. No matter what, Prarthana never stopped and always focussed on her dreams.


After moving to Solapur from her village, Thombare showed immediate development as she got more exposure to advanced training. She used to travel almost 70 km for her training and the player didn’t have enough time to rest. And that is why her father decided to shift to Solapur. Once she got the national success, they decided to shift to the next phase. Her next phase was her training at the Sania Mirza Training Academy (SMTA).

Under Coach Imran Mirza’s guidance, the young tennis player began soaring unexpected winning at ITF tournament victory within less than a month. Meanwhile, she also earned a bronze medal along Sania Mirza at the Asian Games 2014 in Incheon, South Korea.

Being a big fan of Sania Mirza, Prarthana Thombare got her first chance to play with her at the Fed Cup. And over time, they developed a good partnership. Their partnership favoured in the Asian Games as well.

Her enrolment at SMTA helped her to change many aspects of her sport. After shifting to Hyderabad, she discovered she is a good defensive player and her coach taught her to become more aggressive on the field. Once she clarified her fitness regime & concentrated on her strengths, she was able to improve vastly and rest is the history.

In 2015, Prarthana Thombare earned 11 titles. Prarthana’s rose with her 1st quarter-final finish. She successfully entered into the World ITF top 10 doubles rankings.
