“Playing for India in a World Cup is a dream but want to stay in present”: Washington Sundar

Having showcased notable performances in the domestic circuit and in the IPL, Washington Sundar has become a regular in India’s T20 side. Sundar also featured in all three matches played in the recently concluded T-20 series against Bangladesh.

Being a finger spinner, bowling in powerplay overs in a T-20 game is a tough task, but the RCB spinner has attained great proficiency in bowling at such a juncture of the game.

Washington Sundar has been selected in the upcoming T-20 series against West Indies and would be keen to deliver good performances in the series ahead of the World Cup 2020, scheduled to be held next year.

Speaking to ESPN CricInfo, the 20-year old spinner believes that bowling in first six overs is a difficult job but is currently relishing the challenge.

“It’s a difficult job to do in T20s. To hit the right length is very difficult and of course errors will happen. It’s a tough job, but that’s something that excites me as well. It’s challenging to bowl to both right-handers and left-handers in the powerplay and I have enjoyed it ever since I was given that role in T20s about two-three years back.”

For RCB bowler, playing at International level requires skills and a bowler must do all the homework before he steps onto the field to spring his magic.

“The mindset differs for me for both right and left handed batsmen. And it varies from batsman to batsman as well. One might be strong on the off side and the other maybe strong on the leg side. Especially at this international level, there’s no margin for error and it’s important to do your homework. You need to be really precise with the lengths and lines you want to bowl.”

Clarity of thought is one of the crucial aspects when bowling against fearless batsmen in the cricketing world and Sundar has done that to perfection with deliberate practice.

“The clearer your mindset is, the calmer you can be when you bowl. If you know what you want to do, you don’t generally think about too many things. You only think about execution. It’s just about that clarity of thought and not having too many other things in my mind that helps me.”

“While batting it’s about the clarity in thought. Once you assess the pitch, you will have a clear thought and you have a better chance of being successful. I’ve always wanted to be that kind of a person and cricketer who has clarity in thought and understands what needs to be done for the team.

Representing India in the World Cup is a dream for Sundar but for now, the RCB bowler wants to focus in the present and doesn’t want to go too ahead.

“ I just want to stay in the present and not think too far ahead. Definitely, playing for India in a World Cup is a dream, but for now I just want to work on my game and stay in the present.” He signed off.
