India completed a strong 2-0 series sweep against the West Indies with a seven-wicket victory in the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The hosts needed just 121 runs to win and finished their task on the fifth day morning with KL Rahul staying unbeaten on 58 runs.

The match ended with India chasing down the target in 35.2 overs. KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel guided the team home after some early wickets fell. This victory marked captain Shubman Gill’s first series win as Test leader.

Sai Sudharsan made 87 runs and Nitish Reddy added 43 runs to help India reach a commanding position.

The Indian batting order showed great depth with contributions from multiple players. KL Rahul scored 38 runs at the top while wicket-keeper Dhruv Jurel made 44 runs batting at number six. The team declared their innings after batting for 134.2 overs.

West Indies Struggle In First Innings

The West Indies managed only 248 runs in their first innings after being bowled out in 81.5 overs. John Campbell scored 10 runs while Tagenarine Chanderpaul made 34 runs at the top. Alick Athanaze contributed 41 runs and Shai Hope added 36 runs in the middle order.

Follow-On Enforced

With a massive lead of 270 runs, India enforced the follow-on and asked the West Indies to bat again. This decision put additional pressure on the visiting team to save the match.

The follow-on rule in Test cricket allows the team batting first to ask the opposition to bat again immediately if they have a lead of 200 runs or more. India used this rule to try and wrap up the match quickly.

West Indies Fight Back In Second Innings

The West Indies showed much better fight in their second innings and scored 390 runs before getting bowled out. John Campbell led the resistance with his maiden Test century of 115 runs from 199 balls with 12 fours and three sixes.

Campbell became the first West Indies opener to score a Test hundred in India in 23 years. The last opener to achieve this feat was Wavell Hinds who scored 100 runs at Eden Gardens in 2002. Campbell reached his century with a six off Ravindra Jadeja and was eventually dismissed lbw by the same bowler.

Shai Hope also scored a brilliant century in the second innings. He made 103 runs from 214 balls with 12 boundaries and two sixes. This was Hope’s first Test century in eight years, with his last hundred coming against England in 2017.

Hope broke the record for most innings between two Test centuries for West Indies players. He took 58 innings between his centuries, surpassing Jermaine Blackwood’s previous record of 47 innings. Hope’s century helped him complete 9,000 runs in international cricket.

Campbell and Hope put on a crucial partnership of 177 runs for the third wicket. This partnership helped the West Indies reduce the deficit and gave them hope of saving the match.

Lower Order Resistance

After both centurions fell, the West Indies lower order continued to fight. Justin Greaves remained not out on 50 runs from 85 balls while Jayden Seales scored 32 runs from 67 balls. The last wicket partnership between Greaves and Seales added 79 runs and lasted for nearly two hours.

This partnership was the second-highest tenth wicket stand against India and helped the West Indies set a target of 121 runs for India to chase. The resistance from the tail-enders showed the fighting spirit of the West Indies team.

India’s Bowling Performance

Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler for India in the second Test. He picked up eight wickets in the match including five wickets in the first innings and three in the second innings. His first innings figures of 5-82 helped India gain a big lead while his second innings performance of 3-104 broke crucial partnerships.

Kuldeep was named Player of the Match for his bowling performance. He said bowling lot of overs on a slow pitch was challenging but he enjoyed getting breakthroughs in the middle overs.

Ravindra Jadeja also bowled well and picked up four wickets in the match. He took three wickets in the first innings and one in the second innings. Jadeja bowled 52 overs in total across both innings.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj provided good support with the new ball. Bumrah took three wickets in the second innings while Siraj picked up two wickets. Washington Sundar also chipped in with one wicket.

India needed 121 runs to win the match and series. They started their second innings late on the fourth day and scored 63 runs for the loss of one wicket. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed early for eight runs while KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan were unbeaten.

On the final day, India needed just 58 more runs to win. KL Rahul continued from his overnight score of 25 and went on to make an unbeaten 58 runs with six fours and two sixes. He formed a good partnership with Sai Sudharsan who scored 39 runs.

After Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill fell, Rahul partnered with Dhruv Jurel to complete the victory. Jurel remained not out on six runs while Rahul finished the match with a boundary.

Series Awards

Ravindra Jadeja was named Player of the Series for his all-round performance. He scored 104 runs in the first Test and picked up eight wickets across both matches. Jadeja’s contribution with both bat and ball was crucial in India’s series victory.

The 36-year-old all-rounder credited head coach Gautam Gambhir for moving him up to number six in the batting order. Jadeja said this change helped him think more like a proper batsman rather than a lower order hitter.

Jadeja also surpassed Harbhajan Singh to become the third-highest wicket-taker for India in home conditions. He now has 377 wickets at home in international cricket, behind only Anil Kumble and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Historic Achievement

With this 2-0 series win, India equaled a world record by winning their tenth consecutive Test series against the West Indies. India last lost a Test series to the West Indies in 2002 and have won every series since then.

This was also captain Shubman Gill’s first series victory as Test leader. The 25-year-old took over the captaincy for this series and led the team to a comprehensive victory.

The series victory was significant as it came after India failed to qualify for the World Test Championship final in 2025. This win helps India’s position in the current WTC cycle and gives them confidence for upcoming challenges.

India showed their dominance by taking all 40 wickets across both Tests. The bowling attack worked well as a unit with spinners and pacers sharing the workload effectively. The batting also contributed with five centuries and several good individual performances.

The West Indies, despite the series loss, showed improvement in the second Test. The centuries by Campbell and Hope along with the lower order resistance demonstrated that they have the talent to compete at the highest level.

Captain Roston Chase acknowledged that his team needs to keep improving from this series. He said the players in the squad are some of the best in the Caribbean and this match should serve as a stepping stone for future success.

India will next face South Africa in a two-match Test series next month. The team will be confident after this comprehensive victory and will look to continue their good form in home conditions.
