Novak Djokovic Breaks Records, Teenager Makes History at French Open 2024
The French Open remains on focus and one that provides much drama and thrills. On the fourth day of the French Open 2024, Novak Djokovic consolidated his dominance on clay, a Russian teen made her mark in the championship, while Daniil Medvedev failed to replicate his other success on this surface.
The world number one Novak Djokovic beat Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo, even after him being injured. It was a 5-set game in which the current World no. 1 lost the second and third set but succeeded in winning 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. This win also extended Djokovic’s quarterfinal streak at the French Open, it was his 15th consecutive quarter-finals. More remarkably, this success led him to achieve his record-setting 370th Grand Slam win, a figure he is tied with Roger Federer.

The game ended with Medvedev losing in straight sets against Nishikori for the second time this year at Roland Garros.
Earlier this week, the World No. 2 also lost in straight sets to Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and now dropped a four-set loss to Australia’s Alex de Minaur. Fifth seeded Medvedev took a good start and soon lost to him 6-4, 2-6, 1-6, 3-6. His best result in Paris saw him reach the quarterfinals this year, but the current loss puts him on the wrong side of inconsistency at the French Open. He has unfortunately been knocked out for the first round five consecutive times.
Australia’s Alex de Minaur won the maiden ATP title this year and he has made records for Australian Tennis by becoming the first Australian to secure the title in Sydney since Pat Cash in 1998.
This latest triumph is a landmark achievement for the Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur inside the ATP Finals. He had reached only the second round in the French Open and out of 10 attempts, he succeeded to win only 3 times. But, the commitment shown on clay has been a boon for him as he improved himself to greater levels. This year he achieved the first quarter of Masters on the surface in Monte Carlo and now he got France Open quarter finals. This victory also has some historical context for Australian tennis since De Minaur Managing to reach the last eight in French Open for the first time since 2004 when Lleyton Hewitt achieved this feat.

In the women category of the French Open too, a rising star was seen emerging. Namely, Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva qualified for the women’s quarterfinal and was only 17 years and 27 days old, which is the record to the title of youngest participant of the tournament since 2005. She fought past a rather perky home favourite, Varvara Gracheva, in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) to qualify for the quarter-final stage for the first time in any major tournament.
It has been a commanding performance throughout the round for Andreeva and the only set she has lost thus far was in the first set of the match. But her next match will not be an easy one that will require a lot of effort to wrestle, she will be up against the world number two, Aryna Sabalenka.
Aryna Sabalenka, who hasn’t lost a set in the French Open yet, had an easy afternoon defeating 6-2, 6-3 Emma Navarro. This success also means that she did not lose a set at all throughout this tournament. The victorious celebration dance with the music that resembled disco toppling pointed to Sabalenka’s high spirits and confident character after the match. This triumph places her in a position at just one single match away from achieving the regarded position in the subsequent series of the WTA functional tournaments, forming her seventh nomadic Grand Slam semifinal.
Other Notable Matches
The French Open continues to see exciting matchups across the board. In the women’s draw, 12th seed Jasmine Paolini defeated Elina Avanesyan, while fourth seed Elena Rybakina overcame Elina Svitolina. Paolini and Rybakina will now face each other in the quarterfinals.
