The Board of Control Cricket For India (BCCI), the richest board of all cricket boards in the world possesses the power to dominate cricket. The BCCI does not let its current cricketers play in leagues other than the IPL, however, the commencement of Major League Cricket in the United States may result in a large number of domestic retirements in India due to the proclivity to relocate to the United States.

The international cricket ecosystem is progressively shifting towards franchise cricket, and the arrival of Indian Premier League teams in the United States via the debut season of Major League Cricket (MLC) might be a key step in that direction.

The cricketing landscape is changing forever, with the Kolkata Knight Riders (Los Angeles), Chennai Super Kings (Texas), Mumbai Indians (New York), and Delhi Capitals (Seattle Orcas) taking ownership or making significant investments in four of the six franchises (the other two being the Washington Freedom and San Francisco Unicorns). Even the two franchises that do not have IPL interests are owned by Indian-origin individuals. The major investors in the San Francisco Unicorns are Venture Capitalists Venky Hariharan and Anand Rajaraman, who have brought on the Australian state side Victoria.

The argument over club vs country has been raging for some time. The BCCI does not let its current cricketers play in leagues other than the IPL, however, the commencement of Major League Cricket in the United States may result in a large number of domestic retirements in India due to the proclivity to relocate to the United States. Consider Unmukt Chand and Milind Kumar, who have found takers in their debut season despite abandoning their domestic cricket careers in India.

“If you are not certain of earning at least 15 crores from IPL in five years, or you are not a top-line India international with sponsorships and revenues of Rs 50 crore or more, why would you remain back?” an IPL franchise source told PTI while discussing the franchise.
