The ongoing stalemate between India and Pakistan regarding the 2023 Asia Cup has sparked widespread discussions within the cricketing community. Despite the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) announcement five months ago that the Indian cricket team would not be going Pakistan for the tournament, no new host has been finalized yet.

In response, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has adopted a strong position on the matter and has threatened to boycott the 2023 Cricket World Cup, which is to take place in India. PCB Chief, Najam Sethi, has underlined that this issue goes beyond the two events and encompasses the 2025 Champions Trophy. He has voiced his concerns over India’s security issues and highlighted that many teams are touring Pakistan without any security-related incidents. Sethi also stated that there is a possibility of not attending the event in India.

During a recent press conference, Sethi reasserted his position on the matter. He said, “I haven’t ruled anything out because all teams are touring Pakistan with no security worries. So why is India anxious about security? Similarly, we can also have security concerns over sending our team to India for the World Cup, and will be discussing this in the upcoming meetings.” Sethi also pointed out that this issue has far-reaching consequences beyond the Asia Cup and World Cup, as it impacts the Champions Trophy.

The lack of progress in resolving the issue has raised speculations on future cricket relations between India and Pakistan. The two countries have not engaged in any bilateral cricket since January 2013. While India’s most recent visit to Pakistan was for the Asia Cup in 2008, Pakistan’s last trip to India was for the T20 World Cup in 2016.

It remains to be seen what measures the International Cricket Council (ICC) will take to address the impasse between the two nations. Nevertheless, this issue holds significant implications for cricketing relations between India and Pakistan, and the upcoming months will be crucial in determining the future of cricketing ties between the two nations.
