Kane Williamson stresses upon “fighting spirit” of his team after a humiliating defeat against Australia in second test

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has said that his team has to fight until the end and show some fighting spirit after a humiliating 247-run defeat against Australia in the second Test match. Tom Blundell’s century in the second inning goes in vain as the wickets keep tumbling on the other end in a massive 488-run chase. Williamson advised his teammates to mirror Ton Blundell if they are to win the remaining Test match of the three-match series. Australia have already won the series 2-0. He lauded the efforts by Tom Blundell and rated his innings as “magnificent”.

“Obviously it was hard work out there, the task was immense. But you look at some small positives… that was a truly fantastic innings,” Williamson said after the loss to Australia in just 4 days.

“He led the way and it is important that we all take something from that.

“The effort from the bowlers throughout was something that is inspiring to us as a team, that never-give-up attitude.

“But at the same time if we are looking for areas to improve there are a few of them. We do need to try and put Australia under a bit more pressure before their first innings total gets past that point of control,” Williamson added.

Williamson won the toss and yet he decided to put Australia bat first which turned out to be a match deciding factor. Australia posted a humongous total of 467, responding to which the Kiwis managed to post just 148 runs in the first innings. Australia took their chances and declared the second innings on (165/5) just to secure a strong lead. New Zealand continues their woeful run of play to lose the second game as well as the 3-match series.

“All round from our perspective we need to be better in all departments. We do need to be better come Sydney,” Williamson said.

“We haven’t been at our best, but it is important that we try and learn really quickly and improve in all areas.”
