Meanwhile, both India and Pakistan are confirmed to tour Australia in November for their respective series. Cricket Australia (CA) has set its eyes even higher, expressing a strong desire to host a bilateral series between the two Asian giants. This potential series can be a huge boost for Asian fans as India and Pakistan haven’t played a bilateral series since 2012-13. They have only battled against one another in multi-nation tournaments like the Asia Cup and ICC events.

The idea for a bilateral series in Australia stems from the electrifying atmosphere witnessed during the T20 World Cup 2022 match between India and Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). A record crowd of 90,293 fans watched Virat Kohli smashed an unbeaten 82-run knock in a last-ball thriller. This experience has left Cricket Australia, the Melbourne Cricket Club (operators of MCG), and the Victorian government yearning to recreate that magic with another India-Pakistan encounter at the iconic MCG.

Nick Hockley, CEO of Cricket Australia, has openly expressed his interest in hosting such a series. “I think anyone that was here for the India-Pakistan game at the MCG, it will go down as one of the most memorable occasions, not just sporting occasions, that I’ve ever been to. So people want to see that contest. We would love to host that if the opportunity arose. If we can play a role, we’d love to play a role,”

CA’s head of scheduling, Peter Roach, admitted on Tuesday that Australia would also be interested in hosting a tri-series, which last occurred between India and Pakistan during the 1999-2000 season, rather than just a neutral bilateral series, but he noted that there was not sufficient space in the current Future Tours Programme (FTP).

Peter Roach, CA’s head of scheduling, explored the possibility of a tri-series featuring India and Pakistan, similar to the one held in 1999-2000. Roach also said that space constraints within the current Future Tours Programme (FTP) make it impossible at this time. “We don’t have a tri-series currently scheduled in the FTP,” he explained. “But we’re always open to exploring opportunities for matches that excite our fans. Every cricket nation would undoubtedly love to host an India-Pakistan encounter.”

The possibility of India vs Pakistan bilateral series in Australia has ignited a spark amongst cricket fans worldwide. The electrifying atmosphere, the sporting rivalry and the passionate fan base promise a truly unforgettable event. While challenges exist, Cricket Australia’s proactive approach and fans interest has paved the way for a potential future showdown between India and Pakistan.
