Bangladesh’s Wicket-keeper-Batsman Mushfiqur Rahim Retires from ODI Cricket

Looks like it’s a season of players retiring and moving ahead to the other side of their lives.

Just a day after Australian legend Steve Smith pulled the curtains down on his ODI career, Bangladesh veteran Mushfiqur Rahim joined him soon after and bid goodbye to the fifty over format. The athlete announced his retirement from ODIs via his social media account, after Bangladesh failed to qualify in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Mushfiqur was the former captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team and played as a right-handed middle-order batsman and wicketkeeper in the team.

As per the newly introduced ‘category’ system by the (BCB) Bangladesh Cricket Board to reward high performing players, Mushfiqur was included in the Category A of the central contracts for the 2025 season.

However, in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy, he was charged with severe criticism after he scored 0 and 2 against India and New Zealand respectively. The unexpected retirement came a week after Bangladesh faced an early elimination from a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign where they failed to win a game.

Mushfiqur began his international career in 2005 against England at a young age of 18. Known to have a highly versatile batting style, his uniqueness to bat anywhere in the top order, from one to six made him a hugely special player for his team.

His ODI debut was against Zimbabwe in August 2006, and since then he became one of the most experienced cricketers in the limited overs format. Rahim completed his career as the second-highest ODI run-getter, amassing 7795 runs at an impressive average of 36.42.

His batting prowess was evident in his 49 half-centuries and nine hundreds from 274 matches played for his country. In addition, his contributions as a wicketkeeper were substantial, with 243 catches and 56 stumpings recorded to his name.

He is one of the only five wicketkeepers to play more than 250 ODIs for Bangladesh. His form although had been in the spotlight in recent times and came under intense judgement during the Champions Trophy.

Mushfiqur was out for a golden duck against India and subsequently scored just 2 against New Zealand. His last ODI fifty was against Sri Lanka in March 2024, a considerable time ago.

“I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today,” Mushfiqur wrote on his official Facebook page. “Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty. The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny.”

The celebrated player expressed gratitude to his friends and family for their undeniable support throughout his illustrious career in the ODI format. Rahim had also pulled the strings from the T20Is following the 2022 T20 World Cup.

My Perspective:

Currently Mushfiqur is on 94 Tests, contesting in line to become the first Bangladeshi to reach the milestone 100-Test landmark. He leaves behind a legacy as Bangladesh’s most capped ODI player, having participated in 274 matches, which is a huge accomplishment in itself.

With his retirement, we may hope to see Rahim dawn the hat of a coach and mentor for his national team and through his invaluable experience, scale the ODI success rate for the aspiring ODI players of his country.

Although, on the contrary even though he has been a part of the team’s leadership group, he could have worked towards grooming the future wicketkeepers to prepare them for the role and hone their technique with his expertise. He could have done much better as leader.

Seeking inspiration from his repertoire of cricketing skills, current generation of players like Hasan Mahmud, Mahidul Ankon, Jaker Ali can aspire to dominate the fifty over format and build new records for their team.
