Steve Smith’s Shocking Retirement from ODI Cricket: Big Breaking

As the buzz around the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 continues to rise, an explosive news comes in the aftermath of Australia’s Champions Trophy exit post their loss in the semi-final clash against India on Tuesday.

The interim Australian captain and middle-order batsman Steve Smith has announced his retirement from the One Day Internationals format. Smith made his last official appearance for the 50-over format in Dubai on March 4, where the men in blue outperformed the yellow army in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy tournament.

Smith bid adieu to ODI cricket after being the top-scorer for his side in the highly anticipated clash by scoring 73 runs off 96 balls, though the team ended up on a losing side as India sealed a comfortable victory to win the match by four wickets.

With a formidable record behind him, the star batter has featured in 170 ODIs, scoring 5800 runs at an average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96. This feat includes 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries in the fifty over format for his country.

With his retirement, Smith has finished his career as the twelfth highest run-getter for Australia in ODIs. His career best score of 164 against New Zealand in 2016 is the highest score to date. Interestingly, he made his debut as a leg spinning all-rounder; also picked 28 wickets and 90 catches in his impactful tenure.

As per a statement released by Cricket Australia, Smith had informed his fellow mates after the semifinal loss that he’ll retire from ODIs with immediate effect.

It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.”. Smith remarked in his post-match encounter with the media channels.

He also further elaborated that his passion for playing cricket and the opportunity to represent his country at international levels will continue to be visible in the remaining two formats – Test Cricket & T20Is.

“Test cricket remains a priority, and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship Final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage.”

Looking back and taking a trip down the memory lane, Smith was a crucial part of Australia’s ODI World Cup-winning squad in 2015 and 2023. He took over the captaincy reigns of the 50-over format following the retirement of another Australian legend Michael Clarke.

Since his coronation to the captaincy throne in the ODIs, Smith has led Australia in 64 matches, winning 32 of them and losing 28, with no results deduced in four matches. In the current champions trophy 2025 tournament, Steve was appointed as a skipper on an interim basis to fill the unavailability of Pat Cummins, who had to opt out due to a suspected injury.

My Perspective:

Though his sudden retirement news has definitely come as a shock and totally unexpected, Smith proudly departs from the format as one of Australia’s most accomplished and enduring ODI players.

The impact in white-ball cricket has been worth all the appreciation he has earned and will continue to receive in the future too. The records and statistics prove his mettle as a player.

With his retirement from ODI, Steve Smith now paves the way for aspiring and emerging batsmen in the likes of Cooper Connolly, Benjamin Dwarshuis, Jake Fraser-McGurk to step in and carry the Australian cricket’s glory forward.

After making his debut against the West Indies in 2010, his fifteen-year career has been nothing short of being exemplary; leaving the format as a two-time World Cup winner. Smith’s legacy as one of the greats of modern-day cricket will surely be remembered in the times to come. His commitment to Test cricket will continue to keep him as an integral member of the team.
