Akhil Kumar began boxing when he was 13 years old. Kumar first competed in a boxing match at the school state-level boxing in Haryana. Gradually, he became famous for his open guarded boxing action. Akhil began boxing as a hobby but little did anyone knew that he would transform his favourite hobby into a cherished career.

Akhil Kumar was born on 27th March 1981 in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Akhil emerged as an excellent boxer from the ‘Little Cuba’ boxing academy in Bhiwani, Haryana.
An ambitious son of a jail warden, Akhil was crazy for cricket as a kid. His elder brother always told him that they could not afford to waste their money in pursuing a career in sports. But Akhil didn’t stop anywhere in his journey to become of the most successful boxers the country has ever produced.
PROFESSIONAL LIFE
In 1999, Boxer Akhil participated in his first international boxing where he earned a gold medal at the 6th YMCA Junior International Boxing Championship.
The year 2001 saw him earning a gold medal at the International Invitational Boxing Championship held in Russia.
In 2003, Akhil clinched another gold medal in the flyweight event after beating Vilitio M Paylo.
Akhil Kumar acquired the highest recognition as an open guarded boxer at the Commonwealth Games in 2006. He earned a gold in the Bantamweight 54 kg category after beating Bruno Julie in the finals.
Akhil got qualified for the 2004 Athens Games by securing second place at the1st AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Guangzhou, China.
In 2008, Kumar got qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games. Akhil defeated the 2004 Summer Olympics silver medallist, Worapoj Petchkoom, at the Asian Boxing qualifying tournament held in Bangkok.

CONTROVERSY
Apart from his awards, achievements, and performances, the Indian boxer made headlines when he came forward with a defamation case against boxer Dilbagh Singh.
