Women’s T20 World Cup: India stuck in semi-final battle, Pakistan spoils the equation

India defeated Pakistan by 6 wickets in the Women’s T20 World Cup. Despite this victory, India’s problems remain the same – it is difficult to reach the semi-finals. The Indian team could have made this problem easier by defeating Pakistan by a big margin, but it did not happen. This means that India will now not only have to win most of its matches but will also have to hope that New Zealand or Australia lose their matches and lose by a big margin so that the mathematics of run rate can be solved.

The entire equation of India reaching the semi-finals in the Women’s T20 World Cup now seems stuck on the net run rate. Let us understand this in detail. The Indian team is in Group A in the Women’s T20 World Cup. This group also has teams from Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Except for Sri Lanka, all the teams have won one match each. In this way, India, New Zealand, Australia, and Pakistan also have two points each in the points table. Out of these, the top 2 teams of the group will qualify for the semi-finals.

India-Pakistan-Sri Lanka lost one match each

Australia and New Zealand have played only one match each. The teams of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have played two matches each, in which they have lost one and won one each. Thus, Australia and New Zealand are in a better position. One of these teams can reach 8 points. The remaining teams will be able to reach a maximum of 6 points.

Matches left against Sri Lanka and Australia

The Indian team lost its first match to New Zealand and defeated Pakistan in the second match. Therefore, if India wants to reach 6 points, they must win both its remaining matches. India has a match against Sri Lanka on 9 October and Australia on 13 October. Defeat in even one of these would mean that the Indian team would then be left solely dependent on luck.

India’s negative net run rate

If the Indian team defeats Sri Lanka and Australia, it will get 6 points. But there is every possibility that New Zealand or Australia may also have 6 or more points. The net run rate will decide the semi-final match. At present India’s net run rate is -1.217. The run rates of New Zealand (2.900), Australia (1.908), and Pakistan (0.555) are better than India. Sri Lanka (-1.667) has the lowest net run rate and its account has not even been opened yet.

Where did India go wrong?

The match between India and Pakistan took place on Sunday, 6 October. Pakistan gave India a target of 106 runs in this match. India won by losing 4 wickets in 18.5 overs. With this victory, India got two points, but there was not much difference in the net run rate. If India had defeated Pakistan in 11.2 overs, its net run rate would have become positive, but Harmanpreet Kaur’s team could not do so.
