The Indian test team has won many scintillating test matches in recent years. They have become a beast in this format and have a bowling attack that can dismiss any batting in any conditions, whereas their batting lineup can survive any bowling attack even away from home.

A few matches that come to mind are Melbourne 2020, Gabba 2021, Lord’s 2021, etc. Even though the team has won such exceptional matches, there have been some matches where they have lost out of nowhere, and those defeats still hurt. This article talks about three such defeats in the last decade (2014–2023) for the Indian test team.
1. Australia vs India, Adelaide, 2014
In the fourth inning, the Aussies had set Virat Kohli and his team a lofty 364-run mark to reach. The victory appeared to be within reach as Kohli and Murali Vijay formed a big 185-run stand for the third wicket.
India went from 242/2 to 315 completely out, falling 48 short of the goal because, except Vijay and Kohli, the entire batting unit collapsed like a house of cards.
2. England vs India, Birmingham, 2022
Indian supporters remain grieving this terrible loss, which cost them a great chance to win a series of Test matches on English soil for the very first time in fifteen years.
Team India had established a commanding 132-run lead in the first inning with the series on the line. The Indian batsmen added another 125 runs before the close of Day 3, increasing their lead to 257 runs.
On the fourth day of play, however, the side saw a severe collapse, losing the final seven wickets for just under 100 runs courtesy of some rash shots played by Indian batters. England won the match, registering their highest run chase ever in test cricket.
3. Sri Lanka vs India, Galle, 2015
India took a huge first-inning advantage of 192 runs after knocking Sri Lanka out by 183 runs in the opening inning. Sri Lanka scored a whopping 367 runs in the second innings thanks to Dinesh Chandimal’s unbeaten counterattacking century (162* off 169 balls) on an unpredictable track. The Indians were the favourites, with just 176 runs needed to win.
But what happened next was embarrassing beyond belief. The second Indian innings was dismissed for just 110 runs, giving Sri Lanka a remarkable 63-run triumph over the visiting team.
