Tamim Iqbal Makes Strides in Rehabilitation with Productive Net Session
In a promising development, former ODI captain Tamim Iqbal has taken a significant step forward in his rehabilitation process by returning to the batting nets. Following a period of recovery that involved multiple injections to address a nagging back injury, Tamim’s short 15-minute session against throwdowns at the BCB academy premises on Sunday (August 20) has garnered considerable attention. This marks a positive turn of events after a whirlwind month for the veteran cricketer.

Having announced his abrupt retirement from international cricket on July 6, Tamim’s subsequent reversal of this decision, prompted by intervention from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, caught the cricketing world off guard. Seeking treatment for a damaged disc that sidelined him from the lone Test against Afghanistan, the 34-year-old underwent a course of injections in England. He returned to Bangladesh on July 31 and embarked on a rehabilitation program.
Given his uncertainties about his back’s response to treatment, Tamim relinquished his role as ODI captain and opted out of the upcoming Asia Cup, choosing instead to focus on a complete recovery ahead of the ODI series against New Zealand—a significant lead-up to the World Cup.
During Sunday’s net session, Tamim showcased his prowess by predominantly playing off the front foot, occasionally attempting shots off the back foot. His batting form seemed largely untroubled, as he confidently executed drives and cuts against the occasional short ball. Importantly, he engaged in discussions with the medical unit’s members, including physio Bayzidul Islam and Kiron Thoms, the newly appointed head of the board’s rehabilitation center. Tamim’s post-net session stretching and bending of his back without apparent discomfort serve as encouraging signs of progress in his recovery.
Jalal Yunus, Chairman of BCB’s cricket operation, expressed relief at Tamim’s positive strides, underscoring the collective support for the star batter’s rehabilitation journey. Yunus shared, “We all want to see Tamim get back his old form and everyone is supporting him, not only the cricket operations team but our board president [Nazmul Hasan] is also calling and talking to the physio and the head coach and constantly getting updated about him.”
Addressing any potential misunderstandings between Tamim and the team management, Yunus emphasized that any issues would likely be swiftly resolved. Recent reports suggested a discord between Tamim and Bangladesh’s head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, but Yunus remained optimistic, stating, “Everywhere there is misunderstanding and it can also be there in the team, but I don’t think it is a big issue. We are hoping everything will be fine and we will try from every corner and I think there will be no gap.”
As Tamim progresses in his rehabilitation and gradually regains his form, Bangladesh’s cricket community remains hopeful for his triumphant return to the national team, bolstering their chances in future competitions.
