T20 World Cup 2026: Pakistan To Boycotts India Match, ICC Could Suffer INR 2289 Crore Loss

The world of cricket is currently facing a very big problem. It is a problem that involves money, politics, and the most famous rivalry in the sport. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is in a very hard spot right now. Reports say that the ICC could suffer INR 2289 crore loss if the planned game between India and Pakistan does not happen.

The two teams are supposed to play each other on February 15 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. However, the government of Pakistan has said no. They have decided to boycott the match against India at the T20 World Cup 2026. This decision has created a lot of fear among cricket officials because the financial hit would be huge.

The Big Money at Risk

To understand why this is such a big deal, we have to look at the money involved. Cricket is not just a game anymore; it is a big business. The ICC makes most of its money from selling the rights to show the matches on TV and online. The current cycle for these broadcast rights runs from 2023 to 2027. This deal is worth a lot of money. According to reports from The Age, the total value of this deal is about US$3 billion. In Indian currency, that is around INR 27,465 crore. This is a massive amount of money.

However, there is a catch. A very large part of this money depends on one specific thing: India playing against Pakistan. Broadcasters know that when these two teams play, millions of people watch. It is the most watched game in the world. Because of this, broadcasters pay huge sums of money to the ICC.

But they pay this money with the condition that India and Pakistan will meet on the field. In fact, over 40% of the total broadcast money comes just from the interest in India vs Pakistan matches. If the game does not happen, the broadcasters will not want to pay the full price. This is why the ICC could suffer INR 2289 crore loss.

Why the Loss is So High

You might wonder how one single game can cost so much. In the last three years, we have seen how important these games are. The two nations met in the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Each time they played, the value of that single game was estimated at $250 million. That is approximately INR 2289 crore.

Now, we are in 2026. The T20 World Cup is happening, and the schedule has put India and Pakistan in the same group again. This is done on purpose to make sure they play each other. But with the Pakistan government refusing to let the team play, that money is effectively gone.

The rights holder for the broadcast is JioStar. If the match is cancelled, JioStar will lose money from ads and viewership. Because they lose money, they will ask the ICC to give their money back or lower the cost of the deal. If the ICC has to pay back $250 million, it means the ICC could suffer INR 2289 crore loss directly from its bank account.

The PCB and the Silent Game

The situation is getting more confusing every day. Usually, if a country wants to boycott a game, they send an official letter. But the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is doing something very strange. They are playing a game of silence with the ICC. The Pakistan government has publicly said that the team will not play against India on February 15. This was a clear message. But the PCB has not sent a formal letter to the ICC to confirm this.

This has left the ICC waiting. They cannot cancel the match officially until they get a written letter from the PCB. But the PCB refuses to write it. Sources from the PCB say they do not need to write a letter. They argue that since the government announced it on an official platform, that should be enough. One source even compared it to India’s past actions. They asked, “Did India at any point convey to the ICC that they would not travel to Pakistan? No. So is there a need to give anything in writing? No.”

By using this logic, the PCB is keeping everyone guessing. The match is still on the official schedule. The fans know the government said no, but the ICC paperwork says yes. This uncertainty is bad for business, and it brings us back to the main fear: the ICC could suffer INR 2289 crore loss if they cannot solve this quickly.

Details of the Schedule

The schedule for the T20 World Cup 2026 is already set. Pakistan is in Group A. They have already traveled to Sri Lanka, which makes the boycott even more confusing. They are in the country, but they refuse to play one specific team.

Here is the path that leads to the controversial date:

  • Wednesday, February 4: Pakistan plays a warm-up match against Ireland at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. This starts at 11:30 AM.
  • Saturday, February 7: The real tournament begins for them. Pakistan faces the Netherlands in the 1st Match of Group A. This is also at the Sinhalese Sports Club, starting at 11:00 AM.
  • Tuesday, February 10: Pakistan plays against the USA in the 12th Match of Group A. This is a night match starting at 7:00 PM at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
  • Sunday, February 15: This is the big day. The 27th Match of Group A. India vs Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo at 7:00 PM. This is the match that is in danger. This is the match causing the fear that the ICC could suffer INR 2289 crore loss.
  • Wednesday, February 18: After the big drama, Pakistan is scheduled to play Namibia in the 35th Match of Group A at 3:00 PM.

The team is physically present in Colombo. They will play against the Netherlands. They will play against the USA. But when the date comes for the India game, the government says they must not take the field.

If no solution is found, the financial health of world cricket will take a big hit. The revenue for the next cycle will drop. The trust between member nations will break further. And most significantly, the ICC could suffer INR 2289 crore loss, which is a hole in the pocket that will take years to fix. The cricket world watches and waits to see if the money or the politics will win in the end.
