Sunil Kumar Wins Bronze for India at Asian Wrestling Championship in Jordan
Indian wrestler Sunil Kumar grabbed a bronze medal in the 87kg Greco-Roman category at the Asian Wrestling Championship in Amman, Jordan. Even though he didn’t make it to the final, Sunil showed his strength by beating China’s Jiaxin Huang in the bronze medal match. This win gave India a bright moment on the first day of the tournament, even as other Indian wrestlers faced tough losses.
Sunil Kumar started his day strong in the quarterfinals. He faced Tajikistan’s Sukhrob Abdulkhaev and won with a big 10-1 score. At first, the match was close, but Sunil took charge in the second period, scoring all his points there to move forward. Next, he met Iran’s Yasin Yazdi in the semifinals. This time, things didn’t go his way. Yazdi beat Sunil 3-1 and went on to the final, leaving Sunil to fight for bronze. In the bronze medal match, Sunil bounced back. He took on China’s Jiaxin Huang and won, bringing home a medal for India. For Sunil, who won silver in this tournament back in 2019, this bronze shows he’s still got the fire to compete at the top.

While Sunil celebrated his medal, other Indian wrestlers struggled. Sagar Thakran, competing in the 77kg category, started well. He won his qualification bout and moved to the quarterfinals. But there, Jordan’s Amro Sadeh stopped him with a 10-0 victory. Sadeh used a strong 4-point throw from the par terre position to seal the win and earn a spot in the semifinals. After this loss, Sagar’s chance for a medal depended on whether Sadeh reached the final, which would open a repechage round for Sagar. However, that hope stayed uncertain by the end of the day.
Meanwhile, Umesh in the 63kg category lost his qualification match. Nitin, wrestling at 55kg, and Prem at 130kg also couldn’t make it past the qualification rounds. So, out of the five Indian Greco-Roman wrestlers who stepped onto the mat on Tuesday, only Sunil reached the podium.
Greco-Roman wrestling is a style where fighters can only use their upper bodies to attack. They can’t grab or trip with their legs, making it all about strength and smart moves. Sunil’s win in this tough style shows how hard he’s worked to stay good at it. In 2019, he took silver at this same championship, and he’s been a strong name for India in Greco-Roman ever since. This bronze medal adds to his story and keeps India’s hopes alive in the sport.
The Asian Wrestling Championship in Jordan isn’t over yet. On Wednesday, the rest of the Greco-Roman weight classes will compete. India still has wrestlers ready to fight for more medals. Sunil’s bronze gives the team a boost, and they’ll look to build on it. For Sunil, this medal might be a step toward finding his best form again after some ups and downs since 2019.
