Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc will be Unavailable for South Africa Tour
Australia’s upcoming tour of South Africa has been hit with injury setbacks, as Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc are the latest players to be ruled out. This has led to a series of changes in the team composition, including Mitchell Marsh stepping in as the stand-in ODI captain for the five-match series, taking the reins in the absence of Pat Cummins.
The unavailability of Smith has opened the door for Marnus Labuschagne to make a return to the ODI squad. Labuschagne had previously been left out of Australia’s provisional World Cup squad, but Smith’s injury has created an opportunity for his inclusion. Similarly, due to Starc’s injury, the left-arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson, who was already part of the T20I squad, has received a call-up for the ODIs as well.

In the T20I segment of the tour, Ashton Turner has been selected to replace Steve Smith. Smith is currently recovering from a tendon injury in his left wrist, which is expected to keep him off the field for approximately another four weeks. On the other hand, Starc’s absence is due to groin soreness. Both players are anticipated to rejoin the squad in India for the three-match ODI series leading up to the World Cup.
George Bailey, chairman of the national selection panel, shared insights into the decision-making process. Clarifying the situation, he elaborated, “The condensed Ashes series and the commitments of the World Test Championship imposed a significant strain on the team. As we approach the World Cup, we are adopting a cautious strategy.”
Bailey underscored that the team’s main objective is the World Cup and reasoned that it’s most prudent for Smith and Starc to integrate into the squad in India. This move anticipates their complete recovery and their availability for the Indian ODI series, along with participation in the crucial World Cup warm-up fixture.
Taking charge for the T20Is against South Africa, Michael di Venuto will serve as the head coach. He will be supported by assistants Clint McKay and Dan Marsh as they navigate the challenges posed by these injuries and adapt the team’s strategy accordingly.
