Ashes 2023, 5th Test Match: Steve Smith might retire after the Ashes

Steve Smith

Recently there has been a rumor that Steve Smith and David Warner might retire after the 5th Test match of the Ashes. This rumor was shared by Michael Vaughan. He mentioned that the information he received was from the journalists, and till now there is no concrete evidence of this. However, if this turns out to be true, then that can be a huge shock for the Cricket fans, and even for the Australian team. That is because it is not going to be easy to find their replacement.

If the rumors are true, then what can be the reason behind it?

If the news of the retirement is correct then the possible reason could be the recent inconsistent form of both the players. However, for Warner, it is more of a worry. That is because his performance has gone down at a quick rate. In the first three Test matches, he performed only with an average of 23. This is far below his batting standards.

For Steve Smith, the reason can be inconsistent performance. Even though he has got a few good scores, and even a century in the current Ashes series. But there is no question about the fact that the batting standard of Steve Smith is much higher. That is because he is averaging close to 60.

What if the rumors are true?

If the rumors are true, then the Australian team will take a long time to recover from this. Steve Smith is averaging close to 60 and David Warner’s average is 45. That means they both usually add over 100 runs in the team’s total. Their contribution is certainly going to be missed.

However, for now, fans are hoping that this is just a rumor because all the fans want Steve Smith to score 10000 runs. On the other hand, it looks like David Warner might have an uncertain future in the Australian team due to his poor form.
