Shreyas Iyer joins Yashpal Sharma as the 2nd Indian Batter with most ODI innings without a Duck

Indian Middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has joined an unknown and unsung list of most ODI innings without a duck. He joins former Batsman of India Yashpal Sharma as only the second Batter from the country to do so. Yashpal Sharma was the only Indian on the list before Shreyas Iyer entered.

The list is headed by former Aussie opener Kepler Wessels who went 105 innings without getting out on Zero. Yashpal Sharma being second on the list had 40 innings in which he opened his account. Though there is a major gap between the first and the second but the list is really incredible.

Yashpal Sharma was an active ODI player from 1978-1985 and he played 42 matches for the national side. He conversion rate has been incredible as only twice he did not bat, but whenever given the chance, Sharma delivered with an average of 28.48.

However, the way Shreyas Iyer has been playing lately it wont be long before he breaks Yashpal’s milestone as he needs to consistently score in 6 more innings to topple the former Batter. Iyer is 4 behind innings below Jason Rudolph and today against Sri-Lanka he can reach one inning closer.

The 28-year-old will be playing for India in the first ODI against the Lankans today at Guwahati. The Kolkata Knight Riders Captain has been producing consistent performances for the Blues, playing 35 ODI innings and scoring 1537 runs on the way. It is not a bad a record for someone who made his debut just 2 years ago.

Moreover, Iyer has the highest average in the list of batters without going for a duck with 48.03 – even higher than Kepler Wessels. Yashpal Sharma’s average is almost half as Iyer’s and soon the Mumbai born batter could play the most innings without getting out for Zero.

Meanwhile, the focus today is on India and Sri-Lanka’s clash from 2:00 PM at Guwahati and the Blues having won the T20 Series few days ago, Rohit Sharma and co. will hope to keep their form intact.

Another piece of information is that the last time India played at the Barsapara Stadium they successfully chased a humongous total of 323 in just 42.1 overs against West Indies.
