BCCI Set to Appoint Shreyas Iyer as India’s New T20I Captain After IPL 2026
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning a major change in the leadership of India’s T20I team. According to reports, Shreyas Iyer will take over as captain from Suryakumar Yadav after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season ends.
This decision comes after months of poor batting form Suryakumar, even though he led India to victory at the T20 World Cup 2026. The BCCI believes it is time for fresh leadership as the team looks ahead to the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Journey as Captain
Suryakumar Yadav took over as India’s T20I captain from Rohit Sharma after the T20 World Cup 2024. The decision was made after discussions with Rohit, former head coach Rahul Dravid, and current coach Gautam Gambhir.
Initially, many people thought Hardik Pandya would get the job. However, the selectors chose Suryakumar instead. The partnership between Gambhir and Suryakumar worked well from a team perspective. They led India to the T20 World Cup 2026 title, making the team one of the strongest in T20I history.
But there was one big problem. While the team was winning, Suryakumar’s personal batting form dropped sharply. This has now become the main reason for BCCI’s decision to look for a new captain.
The Numbers Tell the Story
Before becoming captain, Suryakumar was one of India’s best T20I batters. From his debut in 2021 until June 2024, he scored runs at a very high rate and played many match-winning knocks.
Here’s how his batting changed after becoming captain:
| Period | Innings | Runs | Highest Score | Average | Strike Rate | 100s/50s |
| Until June 2024 | 65 | 2340 | 117 | 43.33 | 167.74 | 4/19 |
| Since July 2024 (as captain) | 42 | 932 | 84* | 25.88 | 152.03 | 0/6 |
| Since 2025 | 33 | 702 | 84* | 26.00 | 147.16 | 0/4 |
| In T20 World Cup 2026 | 9 | 242 | 84* | 30.25 | 136.72 | 0/1 |
The drop is clear. His average fell from 43.33 to 25.88 after taking over as captain. More concerning is that he did not score a single fifty in the entire year of 2025. He also failed to cross the 50-run mark during the T20 World Cup 2026, except for his opening knock of 84 not out against USA.
Problems in Big Matches
Another issue that has hurt Suryakumar’s reputation is his scores in important matches. During the T20 World Cup 2026, he started well with that 84 against USA. However, when India needed him most in the knockout stages, he could not deliver.
In the virtual quarter-final against West Indies, he scored just 18 runs. In the semi-final against England, he managed only 11. Then came the final against New Zealand, where he was dismissed for a duck (0 runs). These failures in crucial games have raised questions about his role as both captain and top-order batter.
Captaincy vs Non-Captaincy Record
The difference in Suryakumar’s batting when he is captain versus when he is not is quite significant:
| Captaincy Status | Innings | Runs | Highest Score | Average | Strike Rate | 100s/50s | Ducks | Fours | Sixes |
| As Captain | 49 | 1232 | 100 | 28.65 | 154.96 | 1/8 | 4 | 116 | 65 |
| Not as Captain | 58 | 2040 | 117 | 43.40 | 168.17 | 3/17 | 3 | 181 | 114 |
When not leading the team, Suryakumar averaged 43.40 and scored at a strike rate of 168.17. As captain, his average dropped to 28.65 and strike rate to 154.96. He also hit fewer boundaries and sixes per innings when leading the side.
The Injury Factor
According to a Times of India report, Suryakumar has been playing through an injury. The injury appears to be related to his right wrist, which he has been taping heavily since IPL 2025.
During the T20 World Cup 2026, this became more visible. Before practice sessions and matches, Suryakumar would call team doctor Dr. Rizwan Khan to strap his wrist with cotton pads and brown tape. This ritual happened at several venues, though the team tried to keep it away from cameras.
The wrist injury could explain some of his batting struggles. However, it also raises questions about whether he should have been playing at all if the injury was affecting his performance so much.
Why BCCI Wants a Change
The BCCI plans its T20I team based on two-year cycles, matching the frequency of T20 World Cups. After the semi-final exit in 2022, Rohit Sharma led the team for two more years until the 2024 World Cup. After that, he retired from T20Is.
Now, with the 2028 T20 World Cup and Los Angeles Olympics coming up, the board wants a captain who can deliver both as a leader and as a batter. Carrying Suryakumar’s poor form has become difficult for the team management.
The BCCI also wants to give the new captain enough time to settle into the role before the major tournaments in 2028. Making the change after IPL 2026 gives Shreyas Iyer more than two years to build the team and develop his own style of leadership.
Shreyas Iyer: The Chosen One
Shreyas Iyer is four years younger than Suryakumar, which gives him a longer potential stint as captain. More importantly, his recent form has been excellent, and his leadership skills are well-proven.
Iyer has a unique record in the IPL. He is the only captain to lead three different franchises to the final. He took Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020, won the title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, and then led Punjab Kings to the final after being bought for INR 26.75 crore.
This shows he can adapt to different teams and situations. He can work with various players and coaching staff, which is an important quality for an international captain.
The Stats Favor Shreyas Iyer
When you compare the numbers, the choice becomes even clearer. Here’s how both players have performed at positions 3 and 4 in T20 cricket since 2025:
| Player | Innings | Not Out | Runs | Highest Score | Average | Strike Rate | 50s | Fours | Sixes |
| Shreyas Iyer | 25 | 7 | 907 | 97* | 50.38 | 173.42 | 10 | 60 | 61 |
| Suryakumar Yadav | 36 | 7 | 856 | 84* | 29.51 | 145.57 | 4 | 80 | 39 |
Shreyas has scored more runs despite playing fewer innings. His average of 50.38 is much better than Suryakumar’s 29.51. He also has a higher strike rate of 173.42 compared to 145.57. Most notably, Shreyas has scored 10 fifties in just 25 innings, while Suryakumar managed only 4 fifties in 36 innings.
These numbers show that Shreyas is in much better batting form. He has been more consistent and has scored at a faster rate. This makes him the obvious choice for both the captain’s role and a spot in the middle order.
Previous Selection Controversy
When the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, left Shreyas Iyer out of the T20I setup earlier, there was criticism from many cricket experts. People felt that his form and leadership skills deserved a place in the team.
However, the team was doing well, and there was tough competition for middle-order spots. India had many talented players, and it was hard to fit everyone in. But now, with Suryakumar’s form decline, there is a clear opening for Shreyas.
The Mumbai batter has used his time out of the national team well. He focused on his T20 game, scored heavily in domestic cricket and the IPL, and proved he deserves another chance.
India’s Packed Schedule After IPL 2026
The new captain will have plenty of cricket to look forward to. India has a busy T20I schedule lined up after the IPL ends:
| Date | Match | Venue | Teams | Time (IST) |
| Jun 26, 2026 | 1st T20I | Belfast, Civil Service Cricket Club | Ireland vs India | 7:30 PM |
| Jun 28, 2026 | 2nd T20I | Belfast, Civil Service Cricket Club | Ireland vs India | 7:30 PM |
| Jul 01, 2026 | 1st T20I | Chester-le-Street, Riverside Ground | England vs India | 11:00 PM |
| Jul 04, 2026 | 2nd T20I | Manchester, Emirates Old Trafford | England vs India | 7:00 PM |
| Jul 07, 2026 | 3rd T20I | Nottingham, Trent Bridge | England vs India | 11:00 PM |
| Jul 09, 2026 | 4th T20I | Bristol, County Ground | England vs India | 11:00 PM |
| Jul 11, 2026 | 5th T20I | Southampton, The Rose Bowl | England vs India | 11:00 PM |
| Jul 23, 2026 | 1st T20I | Harare, Harare Sports Club | Zimbabwe vs India | 4:30 PM |

| Jul 26, 2026 | 3rd T20I | Harare, Harare Sports Club | Zimbabwe vs India | 4:30 PM |
This schedule includes series against Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe. The five-match series against England will be particularly challenging and will test the new captain’s skills early on.
Suryakumar’s Future Role
While Suryakumar will lose the captaincy, his future in the T20I team is not entirely clear. If he can recover from his injury and find his batting form again, he might still have a role to play as a specialist batter.
However, with players like Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, and others performing well, competition for middle-order spots is fierce. Suryakumar will need to score big runs in domestic cricket and the IPL to prove he still deserves a place in the team.
At 35 years old (as of 2026), time is not on his side. The selectors might prefer to invest in younger players who can serve the team for a longer period.
A Straight Swap
The interesting thing about this change is that it’s essentially a straight swap. Both Suryakumar and Shreyas prefer to bat at number 3 or 4. Both are middle-order specialists who play spin well and can accelerate when needed.
This means the team structure won’t need major changes. Shreyas can slot into the same position Suryakumar occupied, and the batting order can remain stable. This continuity will help the team adjust to the new captaincy without too much disruption.
The Road to 2028
With more than two years until the next T20 World Cup, Shreyas will have time to build the team he wants. He can try different combinations, give chances to young players, and develop a core group that can win the tournament.
The Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 will also be a historic event for Indian cricket, as it will be the first time cricket is included in the Olympics in over a century. Leading India in that tournament would be a huge honor and responsibility.
The transition after IPL 2026 will give the new captain a full schedule of matches to settle into the role. With series against Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe coming up, Shreyas will get plenty of opportunities to show what he can do as India’s T20I captain.
