SA20 Season 4 Auction: Big Changes and Exciting Updates for South Africa’s Premier T20 League
The SA20 Season 4 is gearing up for a thrilling transformation with its player auction set for September 9 in Johannesburg. This year, the SA20 auction promises major shifts, with 72 player slots – 63% of the total 108 spots across six franchises – up for grabs. With new rules, an increased salary cap, and innovative features like Right to Match (RTM) cards, the SA20 Season 4 auction is shaping up to be a game-changer for South African cricket.
SA20 Season 4 Auction: What’s New?
This year, SA20 franchises can retain or pre-sign only six players, the lowest in the league’s history. This means more opportunities for new talent to shine in the SA20 Season 4 auction. Each team can have up to seven overseas players and must include at least 11 South African players in their 18-player squads. Additionally, teams can sign one wildcard player, whose fee does not count toward the salary cap, offering flexibility in building competitive teams.
The salary cap for SA20 has increased to R41 million (US$2.31 million) from R39.1 million in the previous season. This makes SA20 the T20 league with the second-highest salary cap globally, behind only the Indian Premier League (IPL). All six SA20 franchises are owned by IPL teams, adding a layer of prestige and global appeal to the competition.
Right to Match (RTM) Cards
For the first time, SA20 introduces Right to Match (RTM) cards. These allow franchises to match the highest bid for a player who represented them in Season 3, securing their services for the upcoming season. The number of RTM cards a team can use depends on how many South African players they retain before the auction.

Stephan Cook, Head of Cricket Operations for SA20, highlighted the significance of these changes: “The Betway SA20 Season 4 Player Auction is setting up to be the most exciting yet, with about 60% of player slots available for franchises to fill. Mechanisms like RTM cards, wildcard players, and an increased salary cap are sure to create interesting situations for teams.”
The SA20 continues its commitment to nurturing young South African cricket talent. The rookie draft has been scrapped, but teams must now sign at least two under-23 players in their 19-player squads. This ensures that emerging stars get a chance to compete on a bigger stage alongside experienced international players in SA20 Season 4.
SA20 Season 4 Schedule
Unlike previous seasons, SA20 Season 4 will start earlier, on December 26, due to the national men’s team playing abroad until mid-December and stadium upgrades for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The season will wrap up by January 26, offering fans a festive season of thrilling T20 cricket. The league will return to its usual January to mid-February window in 2027 and 2028, with a slightly longer schedule. The number of franchises (six) and matches (34) remains the same for this season.
The Auction of SA20 Season 4
The SA20 auction, led by the popular auctioneer Richard Madley, will be a high-stakes event. With 72 player slots available, teams will compete to secure top international and South African players. The increased salary cap and wildcard player option will likely lead to intense bidding wars, making the SA20 Season 4 auction a must-watch for cricket fans.
The SA20 has grown steadily since its first season, with the salary cap rising from R34 million to R41 million. This growth reflects the league’s rising status in global T20 cricket. By prioritizing local talent and offering a platform for young players, season 4 continues to strengthen South African cricket while attracting global attention.
