Rohit Sharma Goes Past Sir Don Bradman In Home Test Batting Average

Rohit Sharma is now averaging more than Sir Don Bradman in the test matches at home. Bradman’s batting average in the test matches that he played in Australia is 98.22, while Rohit’s batting average in the 18 test innings that he has played in India so far is 99.84. Rohit has scored 6 hundreds in his test career and all of them have come at home.

There has always been a question mark over Rohit’s credentials as a test player, but it has been largely because of his performance overseas. He has been shaky against the moving ball and hasn’t lived up to his potential whenever he has played in the whites outside the subcontinent.

However, in Asia and particularly in India, his numbers have always been great. The reason why Rohit has been so good playing in the subcontinent conditions is because the ball doesn’t seam around for a long period of time in this part of the world.

In the ongoing Ranchi test match, there was surely quite a bit of help for the fast bowlers on the first day, but that’s generally not the case in India. The game usually revolves around spin bowling in India and Rohit is an outstanding player of spin.

Rohit will, however, have a real challenge in front of him when he tours New Zealand where the ball will not only swing in the air, it will move off the deck as well.

For the time being, the 32-year old right-hander has surely established himself as India’s first choice opener in test cricket, but if he doesn’t do well in New Zealand, the questions will arise again.

Rohit has so far played 2 test matches in New Zealand in which he has scored a total of 122 runs at an average of 40.67. These are decent numbers, but Rohit wasn’t opening the innings in those 2 test matches. This time around, he will be opening the innings and will be up against the new ball.

If Rohit maintains the same level of performance overseas that he has maintained in India so far, he will put India’s opening issues to bed at least for the next few years.
