New Zealand vs Bangladesh 2nd Test

New Zealand vs Bangladesh 2nd Test

New Zealand dominance at home in Tests continuous as they registered another massive victory in the first Test against Bangladesh by an innings and 52 runs and lead three-match test series 1-0. A stellar partnership between Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah of 235 runs in the second innings went in vain as Bangladesh suffered defeat in the first test. New Zealand’s top three demolished Bangladesh, with the trio scoring 493 runs in the first innings combined.

New Zealand put on a massive 715-run total on the board in the first innings, which eventually proved too much for the Bangladesh, who were bowled out on 234 and 429 runs in the first and second innings respectively. New Zealand seamers were ruthless on the Bangladeshi batsmen, with Boult, Southee and Wagner picking up nineteen out of 20 wickets.

Favorites for the Second Test

Experienced campaigners such as skipper Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar, opener Tamim Iqbal showed character with the bat but a massive total of 715 runs put on by New Zealand in the first innings was just too much for the Tigers. New Zealand are expected to continue their dominance as Bangladesh had an improbable task in hand to register an upset in the second Test. New Zealand definitely looks favorites as of now.

Key Players

  1. Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson

It was skipper Kane Williamson who set up the win in the first test, showing his class in the first Test. His unbeaten knock of 200 off 257 balls helped New Zealand post a massive total on the board. The right-handed batsman enjoyed an amazing 2018 with the bat, currently sitting at number two in the Test ranking. He is our number one player in the eleven and once again the captain of our eleven.

  1. Tom Latham

Tom Latham

New Zealand’s opener Tom Latham has been playing consistently for New Zealand as an opener for a while now. The left-hander hasn’t had a good run in the Test series against Pakistan. However, skipper Williamson kept faith in him, persisting with him in the Tests against Bangladesh. In the first Test against Bangladesh, the left-hander certainly lived up to the expectations, scoring a fine century in the first innings of the first Test. He got out at 161, collecting 20 boundaries in the innings. He is our third batsman in the line-up.

  1. Mahmudullah

Mahmudullah

With Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim not in the eleven, the onus was on skipper Mahmudullah to take the team over the line and boy, he played a spectacular inning in a bid to save the test but couldn’t. The 33-year old batsman played a spectacular knock of 146 runs in the second innings. If Bangladesh seeks to win the second Test, Mahmudullah needs to stand up and play another such inning against New Zealand’s fearsome bowling line up.

  1. Soumya Sarkar

Soumya Sarkar

Soumya Sarkar looked head and shoulder above his teammates in the second Test ended up being the highest scorer for Bangladesh in the first Test. He went hand in hand with Mahmudullah in the 254 run stand which delayed New Zealand’s win, if not win the test. He is our fourth batsman in the list.

  1. Tamim Iqbal

Tamim Iqbal

After witnessing a patchy run in the ODIs, Tamim came back spectacularly, showing his class in the last Test, scoring 126 and 74 runs in the first and second innings respectively. He is the vice-captain in our side.

  1. Tim Southee

Tim Southee

New Zealand mainstay Tim Southee was always going to a tough task for Bangladesh and those who questioned his abilities, right-arm seamer did tell them why he is New Zealand’s best seamer along with Boult, picking up six wickets in the match (three in each innings). Unarguably, Tim Southee is a vital cog in the side and in our eleven too.

Pitch Report

basin reserve stadium wellington

New Zealand have scored more than 500 in five of the last seven Tests they have played in Wellington, where it gets easier to bat as the match progresses. Sri Lanka were 13 for 3 in their second innings when New Zealand last played at Basin Reserve and the visitors went on secure a draw – Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews batting out the entire fourth day before rain intervened on the final day. The rain threat looming large on the first three days of the upcoming match, it’s likely to be a start-stop affair while the pitch is expected to be a better, according to Boult.
