Chelsea star Christian Pulisic accepted that he and his Chelsea teammates have to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to stop dropping points after their tie against Brighton on Wednesday ended in a 1-1 draw.
The 21-year-old United States skipper missed three clear cut chances in their stalemate against Brighton, although this did not prove too costly for the Blues in terms of the race for Champions League places as both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur lost their respective match to Arsenal and Southampton.
Chelsea who is currently fourth in the latest Premier League standings has a five-point advantage over the Red Devils while Spurs and Wolves are a further point adrift.
However, Pulisic, who has netted five times in his first season with the Blues since his 58-million-pound transfer from Borussia Dortmund, says Chelsea would have to develop a killer instinct in front of goals and convert all the half-chances that they get in the match.
“We said at half-time that we had the chance to kill the game and we just weren’t able to,” said Pulisic.
“We couldn’t get the goal and, in the end, they found an unbelievable goal.
“So now it is about doing a bit more to keep going, attack and create chances and just have that killer instinct. Just a little bit of that, we are missing that.”
Reflecting on his own individual performance, Pulisic said: “I can do better with that as well.”
Just being more clinical in the final third, finding the right pass or shot and scoring the goals. That’s both mental and technical.”
Talking about the Brighton match, Pulisic said “After we scored the first goal it was just about continuing and just not stopping there, making it two or three and putting the game to bed.
“We’ve had troubles with that this year and then, in the end, they fought until the end, scored a great goal and that is how it goes.”
Jadon Sancho and Wilfried Zaha are said to be among Chelsea’s targets as it seeks to add depth to Frank Lampard’s young squad and Pulisic made it clear that he is not worried about the prospect of fresh faces at Chelsea.
He said, “It is normal, teams look to improve and if players do come in there is competition.
“That is how it goes, so we’ll be ready for that and hopefully we’ll have players that come in and want to help us.”
