Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) has decided to postpone Lankan Premier League T20 tournament till mid-November. It was earlier scheduled to start from August 28th 2020.

70 players will be taking part in the upcoming Lankan Premier League who will play for five teams.

The league has been postponed as per the latest report from Ministry of Health and Welfare of Sri Lanka, who declared that the island nation has seen a huge rise in  C0VID-19 cases with the total number of 2871 cases registered on August 11th.

The good news is that Sri Lanka has recorded less Covid-19 cases as compare to other Asian countries where the numbers are increasing alarmingly to a great extent.

The news was confirmed by SLC President Shammi Silva who was speaking to Newswire. He also said that given the current situation we are in It will be difficult to convince the foreign players about the quarantine procedures as it is mandatory that anyone travelling to a new place had to isolate themselves for 14 days.

We had a discussion with the health authorities and the 14 day quarantine period for anyone entering the country is compulsory. So it’s difficult to play the tournament at the end of August. We will play the tournament in mid-November after IPL,” he said.

This is not the first time that Sri Lanka’s T20 league has been cancelled. The board had announced the LPL in 2018 as well but it had to be shelved due to insufficient interest.

The league was played in 2012 but could not continue to the next edition due to less number of crowds came to witness matches in the inaugural edition as well as corruption rumors which completely tarnished the image of Sri Lankan Cricket Board in 2012.
