Jyothi Yarraji Early Life

Jyothi Yarraji was born on the 28th of August 1999 in Visakhapatnam, Andra Pradesh. Jyothi Yarraji, like many Indian athletes, grew up with limited resources. Her mother, Kumari, is a domestic helper who works part-time as a cleaner in a city hospital, and her father, Suryanarayana, is a private security guard. They made less than Rs 18,000 monthly in total. Jyothi was always destined to become a top athlete.

Jyothi Yarraji first came into the spotlight in 2015 after winning the gold medal at an Andhra Pradesh inter-district meet. She then moved to the SAI Centre in Hyderabad to train under coach N Ramesh, an Olympian and Dronacharya awardee.

Jyothi relocated to the Odisha Athletics High-Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar in 2019 and there she came into contact with British coach James Hillier. She won the Gold Medal at the Khelo India University Games.

In January 2020, she clocked 13.03 seconds to win gold at the All India Inter-University athletics meet and also set the national record. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be ratified into the official record books because the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) did not test her before the championship and neither was there any technical delegate from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) at the event. She clocked another national record-setting time of 13.09 seconds at the Federation Cup in Kozhikode but was yet again denied the official mark because it was a wind-assisted run.

Devastated but determined she came back strong she made her international debut at the Cyprus International athletics meet in Limassol on May 10, 2022. With a time of 13.23 seconds, Jyothi Yarraji finally broke the old record of 13.38 seconds established by Anuradha Biswal back in 2002 for the women’s 100m hurdles.

She won the gold medal with a time of 13.11 seconds in the Loughborough International in the UK in May, then just four days later, she clocked a time of 13.04 seconds at the Harry Schulting Games in the Netherlands.

Having Qualified for the commonwealth Games this year in some style the star Indian hurdler is eyeing a successful run in what will be her first major championship race. She stated in an interview that she is not tense about competing in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Jyothi is excited to compete in the biggest competition so far. According to her, this is one step forward to realizing her ultimate goal of winning an Olympic medal.
