Gurjit Kaur Biography

Gurjit Kaur is the Indian Women’s Team Hockey player representing Punjab. She plays as a defender for the national team and is a designated drag flicker. Gurjit Kaur recently represented the national team in the Tokyo Olympics 2021. She was one of the most successful goal-scorers during India’s Asia Cup. Gurjit Kaur has played in 118 games and has 79 goals in these games.

Gurjit Kaur Personal Life

Gurjit Kaur was born in Miadi Kalan village in Amritsar, Punjab.She was born on 25th October 1995. She has an older sister and went to private school in Ajnala. The father had a huge role in their life as he would carry them to school and bring them back in the early days of the cycle.

Gurjit Kaur had to move to boarding school because of the unavailability of movement on a day to day basis. She went on to discover women’s hockey nursery and discovered the passion for the sport. The excellence in the sport earned their spot in the government wing which granted them free food and education which helped the struggling parents.

 

Gurjit Kaur Professional Life

Gurjit Kaur played for the first time for the country when she was called up for the national team camp in 2014 but could not secure the spot in the team. However, through her resilient performances, she became a permanent member of the national team in 2017.

In 2017, she played in the Test Series in Canada followed by multiple international fixtures. The spotlight turned on Gurjit Kaur when the Asia Cup was played in 2017. India went on to win the title that earned the spot in the World Cup for both player and the national team. She was the third highest goalscorer in the tournament.

The player was impressive in the Commonwealth Games 2018 which was held in Gold Coast. Though India could not make it to a podium finish, she caught the attention with her drag flicks and conversions of penalties.

In the recently held Olympics, Gurjit Kaur played an instrumental role in carrying the national team to the semifinals of the tournament.
