When Bhawana first tried race walking, she experienced societal pressures and misogyny, but it did not affect her. 2010’s Rajasthan Athletics Championships saw Bhawana compete in her first competitive event, a 3000m race walk where she competed on behalf of her school. Bhawana continued to compete in competitions at the district level and began earning medals.

Bhawna and her family lived in a mud house as they were poor and her father was the only breadwinner in the house. Due to poverty, Bhawna had to drop out of college. Bhawna couldn’t even afford the shoes and had to walk barefoot in her first race.

 

Bhawna Jat Professional Life

Bhawana competed in a number of Junior Nationals events between 2011 and 2014 but came up empty-handed. Her professional breakthrough didn’t occur until she earned a Silver medal in a 20-kilometer race walk at the Junior Nationals in 2015. She was accepted into the SAI center in Bengaluru the same year she won a Gold at the Junior Federation Cup in the 10 km race walk. She trained there for the following two years.

She placed 10th in a 20km race walk at the 6th National Open Race Walking Championships in 2019 with a time of 1:53.36s. Her first senior-level national competition took place here. Bhawana beat Baby Swomya’s 1.30:29-second national record in 2020 by finishing in 1:29.54 seconds at the National Open Race Walking Championships in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Bhawna Jat hard work paid off eventually when she became the first-ever Indian athlete to represent India in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics at the 20km racewalk event.

Bhawna Jat has come a long way from her village in Rajasthan to Tokyo Olympics and now the Commonwealth Games. Her story is of resilience and determination.
