Jeremy Lalrinunaga Shatters 27 Records At Qatar International Cup To Claim Silver

India’s weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinunaga, won the silver medal in the Qatar International Cup. The youngster claimed three world records en route his silver-medal winning efforts. Jeremy lifted a total of 306 kg ( 140 kg in snatch and 166 kg in clean and jerk) in the 67 kg weight category. Jeremy, a Youth Olympics gold medalist, broke 27 records that were under his name . He shatterred 12 international records, including three world youth, three Asian youth and six Commonwealth records, and 15 national records.

Jeremy, who hails from Mizoram, kicked of 2019 by winning a silver medal in the EGAT Cup. At EGAT Trophy the youngster lifted 131 kg in Snatch and 157 kg in Clean and Jerk. Then in April at the Asian Championships, he broke the Youth World and Asian records by lifting 297 kg (134kg in the snatch event and 163kg in the clean and jerk). At the World Championships in September, Jeremy lifted 296 kg to finish tenth. In addition, he won gold and silver in the Asian Youth Championship and Asian Junior Championship this year.

The Mizoram weightlifter, who is also included in the TOPS scheme of the Ministry of Sports, is currently 33 kilos away from the world record, and had won gold in the 62 kg weight category at the Youth Olympics last year. He changed the weight category from this year and landed in the 67 kg category at the World Championship for the first time. Jeremy lifted 306 kg in Qatar and it was the firt time in his carrer that he heaved 300+ kg. The world record for this category is 339 kg (155 + 185 kg).

Jeremy’s father was a national level boxer. Jeremy used to train boxing with his four brothers and father. One day he saw his friends taking weightlifting training from a coach at a nearby academy. He then felt that strength is needed in this game and they should start playing it. After this, he started taking weightlifting training. Coaches are preparing him for the 2024 Olympics.
