Juventus sack Maurizio Sarri after Champions League exit

Juventus has sacked Maurizio Sarri as the manager of the club after the side’s exit from the Champions League elimination game against Lyon on Friday.

The Serie A champions were eliminated out of the Champions League despite winning the round 16 match by 2-1 against Lyon at home. The last time they played against each other was at the Lyon’s home ground where the home side won by 1-0. That means, the aggregate scores became 2-2. However, Lyon got an edge because of one goal scored away from the home while Juventus scored both its goals at home.

After removing Sarri from the position, the club released a statement saying:

“Juventus Football Club announces that Maurizio Sarri has been relieved of his post as coach of the First Team.

“The club would like to thank the coach for having written a new page in Juventus’ history with the victory of the ninth-consecutive championship, the culmination of a personal journey that led him to climb all the divisions of Italian football.”

Sarri has played a crucial role in winning the ninth Serie A for the side. But despite doing it so much, he hasn’t been able to convince the club’s chiefs and stakeholders. Under Sarri, Juventus failed to even compete well during the last season’s quarterfinals performance in the Champions League.

Under his supervision, Juventus won 34 of the 51 matches, including 9 losses and 8 draws. Juventus also lost the Coppa Italia finals and Italian Supercup finals.

“If I wasn’t devastated by not qualifying, I’d be happy with the performance,” Sarri said after side’s win over Lyon.
