Is Steve Smith an Average ODI Cricketer?
Australian star batter Steve Smith have retired from ODI cricket will continue as player in Test and T20I format.
Smith announced his retirement via social media post “I have been fortunate enough to be part of that squad who won 2 50 Over World Cups, will continue my services in Test Cricket as there is world test championship so excited for that cricket”
Smith shoes would not be easy to fill for Australia, but its high time they march ahead and pick squad for 2027 ODI World Cup to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The question arises whether Steve Smith who was part of FAB 4 is he an average ODI Cricketer or not to be shared in the below format:
Total Number of ODI Matches Played for Steve Smith: 170 Matches
Total Number of Runs Scored for Steve Smith: 5800 runs
Batting Average in ODI: 43.28
50/100: 35/12
Top Score in ODI Cricket: 164 runs vs New Zealand in Sydney 2016.
Wickets Taken: 28
Bowling Average: 34.67.
Best Bowling Figures: 3/16 against England.
2016 was a best year for him in ODI Cricket where he etched 1154 runs in a calendar year where he scored 1154 runs at an average of 50.17 which include 3 Hundreds and 7 Fifties in his 20 innings in 2016.
He also falls in the category of only Australian Batter to score 5 successive innings where he scored more than 50 runs in World Cup where he scored 95 against Afghanistan, 72 against Sri Lanka , 65 against Pakistan, 105 runs against India and 56 unbeaten runs against New Zealand in 2015 world cup played in New Zealand and Australia.
My Perspective:
If you look at all Perspective, Steve Smith is pretty good ODI batter but he is the greatest ODI batter produced by Australia.
The answer is No as there are players like Ricky Ponting & David Warner who have scored more runs in ODI Cricket in comparison to Steve Smith.
Ponting has played 375 ODI matches and scored more than 13,000 runs in ODI Cricket whereas in Test Cricket he played more than 100 Test matches and scored more than 13,000 runs in Test Cricket.
Even David Warner has played less matches in comparison to Steve Smith where he scored more than 6,000 runs in ODI cricket.
Smith is brilliant in Test Cricketer where he etched 36 centuries and more than 10,000 runs in Test cricket and he can easily play in the coming years in the longest format of the game.
Smith looking at his record is not upto the mark in ODI cricket, and he is certainly an average ODI Cricketer in comparison to Test Cricket.
