By trading victories this past week, Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad put an end to their rivalry in the 2023 IPL. Delhi triumphed in Hyderabad five nights prior, and Aiden Markram’s team put on a professional display on Saturday to win by nine runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

In the end, SRH’s victory was due to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Natarajan’s outstanding death bowling, especially considering how Delhi had previously threatened to easily defeat SRH twice. Before a bizarre management decision cost DC the game, Mitch Marsh and Phil Salt provided a 112-run stand that had kept them within striking distance of the target.

Ricky Ponting, the head coach, and Sourav Ganguly, the director of cricket, were afterwards criticised for the “horrible” decision of not bringing up Axar Patel in the match.

David Warner, the captain of Delhi, was out for a duck in the second ball of the 198-run home chase. However, the sensational partnership between Salt and Marsh, who each scored fifty runs, not only reestablished DC’s innings but also put them in good position to take the target. So, even after Salt left the game during the 12th over, Delhi still needed to score 76 runs off 52 balls.

Manish Pandey and Marsh were taken out by SRH in the following two overs, allowing them to reenter the game. Delhi, though, still held one more card, and the in-form batsman Axar Patel was waiting in the outfield. Axar should have been the ideal choice for Delhi because SRH used two left-arm spinners and a wrist-spinner in the middle overs. However, Priyam Garg and Sarfaraz Khan entered the room next.

The asking rate reached double digits and then continued to increase with each delivery as the two young people battled to fend off the spin attack. After Garg was dismissed for 12 off 9, Axar had a great deal on his back when he walked up to bat. Delhi needed 58 off 26 balls at that point. The death over responsibilities were then taken up by Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar, who combined effectively held Delhi to 188 for six, with Axar scoring 29 off 14.

Here is how Twitter users reacted to Delhi’s perplexing strategy to restrain Axar, berating Ganguly and Ponting.
