Highest Runs in Powerplay in IPL History

Indian Premier League is a league loved by everyone around the globe. IPL is considered as a game for batsman’s as most of the times in IPL we have seen players scoring centuries but we’ve rarely seen any bowler taking 5 wicket-haul in a match.

If a batsman scores a century in IPL he needs to play from the starts and mostly openers are the ones who score centuries in IPL matches. Let’s talk about top 5 highest runs ever scored in Powerplays by any team.

KKR vs RR

  • 105-0 (KKR vs RCB): In 2017, while chasing 159, Kolkata Knight Riders openers Sunil Narine and   smashed RCB bowlers all around the stadium and both the openers have managed to score 105 runs just in the powerplay, it’s the most runs scored by any team in the powerplay. Lynn scored 14 runs in first in first and second over while Sunil smashed 26 runs in the fourth over including 6 fours.

  • 100-2 (CSK vs KX1P): In 2014, during the 2nd qualifying play-off Chennai Super Kings scored 100 runs for 2 wickets in the powerplay while chasing a massive total of 227 runs, where Suresh Raina smashed a quick 87 runs of 25 balls including 12 fours and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 348. After scoring 100 runs in the powerplay Chennai Super Kings couldn’t defeat KX1P as they only managed to score 202 runs at the end of the innings.

 

  • 90-0 (CSK vs MI): In 2015 CSK openers Brendon McCullum and Odean Smith smashed Mumbai Indians bowling attack for 90 runs in the powerplay. Between the fourth and the sixth overs the duo smashed the MI bowlers for 61 runs, smashing Lasith Malinga, Harbhajan Singh, and J Suchith for three fours each in their overs, and they managed to chase the target of 184 runs with 20 balls to spare.

  • 87-2 (KTK vs RR): In 2011 during the final league match Kochi Tuskers Kerala Rajasthan Royals through the one-sided affair. After sending them to the pavilion for a total of 97 runs, Kochi Tuskers chased down the total in just 7.2 overs. Out of the 97 runs they managed to score 87 runs for 2 wickets in the powerplay.

  • 86-1 KX1P vs SRH: In 2014, KX1P successfully chased down a total of 200 with the likes of Dale Stayn and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to stop them from chasing the total. Wriddhiman Saha and Manan Vohra smashed SRH bowlers for 86 runs in the powerplay, even after losing one quick wicket of Virender Sehwag KXIP managed to win the match.
