Gautam Gambhir receives death threats; Lodges Police Complaint

Cricketer-turned-politician and BJP East Delhi MP Gautam Gambhir on Saturday wrote to Delhi Police saying he has been receiving death threats to him and his family members from an international number. He urged the police to lodge a case and ensure safety and to him and his family.

In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shahdara, dated December 20, Gambhir wrote, “I have been receiving death threats to me and my family members from an international number which showed +7 (400) 043.” In his letter, the former cricketer said, “I therefore request you to file an FIR and ensure the safety and security of my family.”

Thousands of people have taken to the streets to protest against The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. With the protests turning violent in almost all the parts of the country, several, including Gambhir, condemned it. He took to Twitter to condemn the violent protests and the brutality on police by the mob.

“I think all human rights warriors, bollywood attention seekers and pseudo liberal journalists have gone to the UN to seek a referendum on whether policemen have human rights or not,” Gambhir wrote.

Perhaps this is this tweet that has led to Gambhir receiving death threats. He won the general elections from East Delhi this year, and since then has been active in Indian politics.

A two-time World Cup winner, Gambhir announced international retirement last year. He last played for India in 2016 and was India’s top-scorer in the finals of the 2007 World T20 in South Africa and the 2011 ODI World Cup. In Tests, Gambhir made 58 appearances for India, scoring 4154 runs at an average of 41.95. From 147 ODI, he scored 5238 runs, while in 37 T20 Internationals, he scored 932 runs. Gambhir also guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles, in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

With nothing going right in the country at the moment, Gambhir receiving death threats has added to the chaos.
