In a four-set victory over previous runner-up Matteo Berrettini, world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time ever yesterday on the Centre court. Alcaraz defeated the Italian in a fun battle on Centre Court after rallying from a set down.
He will now face the Danish Holger Rune, who defeated Grigor Dimitrov in a four-set match after a loss in the first set. When their fourth-round match was resumed, Novak Djokovic defeated Hubert Hurkacz in four sets to progress to the quarterfinals. Due to the stringent 11 p.m. curfew in SW19, the seven-time champion’s preparations for a day off were derailed, and the match was stopped on Sunday night with Djokovic leading by two sets.
Djokovic was further hampered after resuming on Centre Court as Hurkacz, a 17th seed from Poland, grabbed the third set. However, the 36-year-old came back to win 7-6 (6) 7-6 (6) 5-7 6-4 and advance to the Championships’ 14th quarterfinal.
Christopher Eubanks pulled off the surprise of the day when the unseeded American defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets. The match was a thriller in every sense of the word, as Eubanks won the last two sets after trailing in the first two to register a big upset.
Daniil Medvedev, who was not allowed to participate in the Championships last year, has now reached the quarterfinals of the biggest Grand Slam in tennis. He was leading by two sets to zero in her Round of 16 match against Jiri Lehecka when he retired due to an injury. It meant Medvedev had received a walkover and reached the quarterfinals.
The seventh and eighth seeds, Andrey Rublev and Jannik Sinner, had already reached the quarterfinals on Sunday and will be playing their match today.
