Steve Smith enjoys playing and captaining the team in India and compares it to playing chess, where one is constantly pushed to stay one step ahead of the game. Australia defeated India by nine wickets in the third Test on Friday under the leadership of Smith, who stood in for regular captain Pat Cummins while he cared for his ill mother at home.

The captain of Australia’s previous tour in 2017 and their primary batsman both prefer playing on spin-friendly surfaces over calm wickets that let games to last a full five days. Smith said he was incredibly proud of his team for coming back after losing the first two Tests in three days following the most difficult of circumstances.

They’re not exactly easy to find. It speaks to the skill in our group and the confidence we have in ourselves that we were able to prevail in this game, especially after losing the toss. “We made a mistake in Delhi by letting that go, but we were well-prepared and had a decent break before coming here.

“It has to do with adjusting our mental condition. It was about believing in our own abilities and strategies. It was about having confidence that we will succeed and removing the outcome from consideration.

The World Test Championship final has obviously been on our radar for a little while, so we are happy to have qualified for it. After Australia won their first Test in India in six years, Smith said, “To tick that off is worth celebrating for this squad.

Smith is one of the game’s sharpest minds, and it shows in the choices he makes while playing. Smith claimed he has done his part and has enjoyed the responsibility while Cummins’ absence.

Smith further added “Look, India is a part of the world that I enjoy leading. Every game is like a game of chess and every balls means something. It’s entertaining to move people, try to get them to think differently, and simply play games with them. I think it’s my favourite spot to captain in the entire globe.”
