Ashes 2023: Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes Captivating Leadership Leaves the World Awestruck

England captain Ben Stokes caught the attention of cricket fans with his innovative approach to the field during the first Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston. Stokes had set up a field with no slips and three fielders each on the off and leg side, positioned in front of the wicket.

This creative move paid off when Australian opener Usman Khawaja fell prey to Stokes’ tactic and was dismissed two balls later. Despite batting on 141, Khawaja was caught charging down the pitch to Ollie Robinson, who uprooted his stumps. The dismissal spurred a mini-collapse, with Australia going from 372/6 to being bowled out for 386, trailing the hosts by seven runs after the first innings.

Stokes’ innovative approach to the field was not limited to Khawaja. After setting up eccentric fields for Australian star Steve Smith, including a leg slip and a leg gully, he eventually dismissed him off his bowling for a meager 16 of 59 deliveries on Day 2.

The 32-year-old’s leadership has ignited England’s transformation in the red-ball format,  leading them to 11 wins in their last 13 matches since taking over as full-time captain.

Stokes’ combination of leadership and skill has led England to series victories at home against New Zealand and South Africa, followed by a clean sweep of Pakistan and a drawn series in New Zealand with head coach Brendon McCullum has seen the team playing fearless and attacking cricket with the bat, while also trying innovative approaches to the field.

Stokes’ performance in the first Ashes Test was a testament to his leadership and tactical acumen. He has been a key player for England in recent years, with his all-round abilities making him a valuable asset to the team. Stokes’ contribution to England’s World Cup win in 2019 was particularly noteworthy, with his match-winning performance in the final against New Zealand.

Stokes’ innovative approach to the field is a sign of the changing face of cricket, with captains and players looking for new ways to gain an advantage over their opponents. The use of data and technology has become increasingly important in cricket, with teams using analytics to gain insights into their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses.
