Australia’s limited-overs wicket-keeper and vice-captain Alex Carey has expressed that he is excited to be training under the Ricky Ponting in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League. Alex Carey has been roped in by the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming 13th edition of the Indian Premier League. (IPL)

“Delhi’s a nice spinning wicket so there’ll be some work to do when we get over there. I can’t wait, even if I’m not playing, to just sit alongside him (Ponting) and chat cricket with him. I’ll probably hang out of his pocket for the few months that I’m there,” cricket.com.au quoted Carey as saying.

Apparently, it was Ponting who had presented Carey with his T20 debut cap two years ago and also worked closely with the wicket-keeper batsman during his stint with the Australian team as an assistant coach in the last year’s world cup.

“Delhi is really strong at the top with the openers and Rishabh Pant at number four so if there’s an opportunity, it’d be at five or six, which is great for me, if I can keep improving my game in the subcontinent,” Carey said.

As of now, Carey is really excited to reunite with Ponting who is serving as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals. In fact, in Ponting’s presence, Delhi Capitals also qualified for the playoffs last season.

“I loved working with Punter, he was fantastic,” Carey said ahead of Australia’s second ODI against South Africa in Bloemfontein.

“He’s really calm, he’s really clear with his messaging. I just can’t wait, even if I’m not playing, to just sit alongside him and chat cricket with him. I’ll probably hang out of his pocket for the few months that I’m there,” Carey said.

With some of the best players from across the globe already in the Delhi squad, the left-handed batsman will have to find himself a place in the side which would be challenging for him. Delhi Capitals already looks very strong with the presence of his national counterpart Marcus Stoinis, the English duo of Jason Roy and Chris Woakes, along with the South African quick Kagiso Rabada, power hitter Shimron Hetmyer, and Nepal’s leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane.

Indian Premier League will start from March 29 with Delhi Capitals playing its tournament opener against Kings XI Punjab on March 30.
