Ajit Agarkar explains why BCCI chose Suryakumar Yadav as India’s T20I Captain over Hardik Pandya
The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) selection committee has named Suryakumar Yadav as the new captain of the Indian T20I team. Ajit Agarkar, the chief of BCCI’s selection committee, revealed the reason behind denying the captaincy role to Hardik Pandya.
Many expected Hardik Pandya, the vice-captain of the T20 World Cup winning squad, to take over the captaincy role. He had experience leading India in limited-overs formats, having captained the team in 3 ODIs and 16 T20Is previously. Additionally, his successful captaincy stints with the Gujarat Titans (IPL 2024) bolstered his claim.

However, Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, revealed that fitness concerns were a major factor in the decision. Both the selection committee and the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, wanted a leader with consistent availability leading up to the next T20 World Cup in 2026.
Ajit Agarkar said, “Hardik is a crucial player with exceptional skills, but fitness has been a challenge for him in the past two years. This creates a difficult situation for the coach and selectors. We need someone consistently available until the next World Cup, and that was the main concern behind this decision.”
Suryakumar Yadav, on the other hand, boasts a clean fitness record. He previously led the Mumbai state team in domestic cricket and has shown leadership qualities on the international level as well. After the 2023 ODI World Cup, he captained India in back-to-back T20I series, leading them to a resounding 4-1 victory against Australia at home and a 1-1 draw in South Africa.
Agarkar highlighted the positive feedback received from the Indian players about Suryakumar. “Suryakumar Yadav was chosen because he’s one of the most deserving candidates,” he said. “We’ve received great feedback from the dressing room. He possesses a sharp cricketing mind, is undoubtedly one of the best T20 batters globally, and is likely to be a consistent presence in the playing XI. Surya has the qualities needed to excel as a captain.”
Suryakumar will be captaining India in the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, featuring a three-match T20I series between July 27 and 30. This tour will also mark the beginning of Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as head coach. Interestingly, Hardik Pandya remains part of the T20I squad but has been removed from the vice-captaincy role. Shubman Gill, who led India to a dominant 4-1 win in the recent Zimbabwe series, has been promoted to the vice-captain position.
